8 September is Victory Day in Malta, a day rich in history, faith, courage and national pride.

Originally known as il-Bambina, the feast celebrates the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Over the centuries, it also became a day to remember some of the most important victories in Malta’s long and turbulent history.

⚔️ 1565 – The Great Siege
The Knights of St John and the Maltese people successfully resisted the Ottoman invasion after four months of fierce fighting, ending the Great Siege on 8 September 1565. The victory gave rise to the name Il-Madonna tal-Vitorja – Our Lady of Victories.

1800 – Victory over the French
The Maltese uprising against French rule, supported by the British, eventually led to the surrender of the French forces in September 1800.

✈️ 1943 – Malta during World War II
The island’s extraordinary resistance during the Second World War is also remembered. In recognition of Malta’s courage under relentless Axis bombardment, King George VI awarded the island the George Cross, which remains proudly represented on Malta’s flag.

Today, Victory Day is celebrated throughout Malta with tradition and ceremony.
🎖️ In the morning, Valletta hosts official commemorations, including the military parade, the inspection of the Honour Guard and the laying of wreaths at the Great Siege Monument.
🚣 In the afternoon, the excitement moves to Grand Harbour for the traditional Regatta, where rowing crews compete in one of Malta’s most spectacular sporting traditions.
⛪ In the evening, churches in Senglea, Naxxar, Xagħra and Mellieħa celebrate the feast of the Nativity of Mary, often accompanied by magnificent fireworks.
From the Great Siege to the Second World War, Malta’s strategic position in the heart of the Mediterranean has placed it at the crossroads of history time and time again.

Victory Day is a celebration of faith, resilience and the courage of those who defended these islands 💕
