Before you enrol, read the fine print.
In today’s digital world, literacy means more than simply being able to read and write. It also means knowing how to navigate information, ask the right questions and check what you’re being told.

When choosing an education programme, don’t rely only on the advertisement. Take a moment to check:

• Is the provider licensed?
• Is the specific programme accredited?
• What qualification will you receive?
• What MQF and EQF level does it carry?
• How many ECTS credits does it have, where applicable?

As UNESCO marks the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day in 2026 with the theme “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity,” we look at what literacy means in everyday life, including making informed decisions about education.

For learners and parents, a few simple checks can make a big difference.

What did MFHEA bring to iChoose 2026? Clarity, guidance and the tools students need to make informed choices about their future.

From MQF Levels 1–8 to qualifications, credits and accredited programmes, our team was on hand to help students, parents and educators better understand Malta’s education and training pathways.

At the event, Dr Jana Kazarjan, Senior Manager of the Research & Policy Department, also explored the Malta Qualifications Framework (MQF), helping turn what can seem like complex education terminology into practical information for making confident decisions.

Whether the path is academic, vocational or professional, every recognised learning pathway has value. And before choosing a course, remember to ask:

Safeguarding the integrity and credibility of qualifications

Qualification fraud, including falsified or altered certificates and misleading claims relating to MQF and EQF levels, can have significant implications for qualification recognition, licensing decisions, and confidence in national and European qualifications frameworks.

To strengthen its capacity in this area, the Malta Qualifications Recognition Information Centre (MQRIC) engaged in discussions and specialised training with Mr Samir Gabro, MSc, Senior Credential Evaluator at the Swedish Council for Higher Education, ENIC-NARIC Sweden, and recipient of the 2026 IERF Sepmeyer Award for Excellence in Credentials Evaluation Research.

The training focused on identifying indicators of qualification fraud, verifying awarding bodies, assessing MQF/EQF level claims, examining real case studies, and learning from international approaches to false and misleading credentials.

Through continued professional development and international cooperation, MFHEA is strengthening staff capacity, supporting consistent decision-making, and contributing to the protection of trust in qualifications aligned with the MQF and EQF.

Strengthening the way we recognise qualifications.

MQRIC recently met with Mr Gabro, MSc, Senior Credential Evaluator at the Council for Higher Education and part of the ENIC-NARIC Sweden network, to exchange knowledge and discuss approaches to identifying potentially fraudulent or misleading qualifications.

By learning from international colleagues and sharing expertise, MFHEA continues to strengthen its work in qualification recognition and support fair, accurate and consistent assessment.
