The Planning Authority has issued an Emergency Conservation Order (ECO) to safeguard a site where archaeological investigations uncovered human remains, prehistoric pottery and intact vessels dating back approximately 6,000 years to the Żebbuġ Phase, the earliest stage of Malta’s Temple Period.

The discovery includes what appears to be a prehistoric cemetery comprising at least eight tombs, making it one of the most significant finds from this period of Maltese prehistory.

The Order will ensure the site is protected while further studies are carried out to determine the most appropriate long-term conservation measures.

The Planning Board has approved the transformation of the long-vacant Buskett Forest Aparthotel at Ta’ Sabbat, Dingli, into a modern elderly care facility accommodating up to 100 residents.

The project will provide dedicated accommodation for persons with dementia, together with a range of supporting amenities, including a pharmacy, multipurpose hall, cafeteria, landscaped gardens and recreational spaces.

Importantly, the development will replace the existing vacant structure without extending onto neighbouring agricultural land, while landscaping measures have been incorporated to help the building blend more effectively into its rural surroundings.

The permit includes a further safeguard through a public deed between the applicant and the Planning Authority, ensuring that the site can only be used as a single elderly care facility and that no additional development rights are granted on the adjoining agricultural land.
