Fort Delimara

Fort Delimara A unique Victorian polygonal fort in Malta, guarding the approaches to Marsaxlokk Harbour gun and two 6-inch Mk VI B.L. guns.

Fort Delimara, at Marsaxlokk, Malta, was one of a ring of forts and batteries that protected Marsaxlokk harbour, along with Fort Tas-Silġ, Fort San Lucian and Fort Benghisa. The fort was constructed between 1876 and 1878 as a flankless fortification. On its outskirts, the Fort included a dry ditch and three counter-scarp galleries. The Main Gate was completed in 1881 as the date inscribed above it

reads. On the inside of the gate are separate accesses to the Communication Passage, Casemates Passage and the Parade Ground. The latter is very large when compared to other Victorian fortifications and comprises several barrack blocks. The Fort’s original armament of six 38-ton RML guns were only superseded in size by the 100-ton guns of Fort Rinella and Fort Cambridge. Four of these guns are still in situ, being the last remaining examples in the world which still stand on their original carriages and platforms. In 1887, a re-armament with the new breech loading technology was proposed, consisting of one 9.2-inch Mk VI B.L. New gun emplacements were constructed at Parade Ground level in 1891. By 1913, modification works on two new gun emplacements housing two 9.2-inch Mk X B.L. guns were ready as the new main armament of Fort Delimara. Again, advancements in artillery technology forced the replacement of mounted guns and in 1938/39, the two 9.2-inch gun emplacements were modified to be armed with the smaller 6-inch Mk VII B.L. During the Second World War Fort Delimara was bombarded by enemy air attacks and fired its guns against mine-laying operations. Following 1945, Fort Delimara remained in use until the abolishment of coastal defence throughout the British Empire in 1956. Upon Malta’s Independence on 21 September 1964, the Fort was transferred to the local government. The site was subsequently used as a farm until taken over by Heritage Malta in 2005. At present, the Agency is conducting a thorough cleansing and consolidation project on site.

🗣️Kieku dawn il-ħitan jistgħu jitkellmu …

🪖Tul it-78 sena li fihom kienet użata, il-Forti Delimara kienet id-dar ta’ b***a suldati Maltin u Ingliżi. Għalkemm għad m’għandniex iċ-ċifri eżatti, ħafna minnhom ħallew marka permanenti tal-preżenza tagħhom billi naqqxu isimhom, in-numru tas-servizz, ir-riġment jew il-kumpanija tagħhom fuq il-ħitan tal-forti. Żommu għajnejkom miftuħa għal dawn il-graffiti meta żżuruna fl-14 u fil-15 ta’ Marzu!

🗣️If these walls could talk ...

🪖During its 78 years of active use, Fort Delimara was home to many Maltese and British soldiers. While exact numbers are still unknown, many soldiers left a permanent trace of their presence by inscribing their names, service numbers, regiments or companies on the fort’s walls. Keep your eyes peeled for these graffiti when you visit us on the 14th and 15th March!

🇲🇹 Mill-ewwel kanuni li tqiegħdu fl-1880 sal-aħħar biċċiet tal-artillerija fl-1939, it-teknoloġija militari avvanzat b'rata impressjonanti. Il-kanun RML ta’ 38 tunnellata kien kapaċi jispara biss tir wieħed kull erba’ minuti u kellu travers ta’ 60°. Sal-1939, il-kanun breech-loading ta’ 6 pulzieri tat-tip Mk VII, seta’ jispara bejn ħames u seba' tiri kull minuta, kellu travers ta’ 150°, u kien jilħaq id-doppju tad-distanza.💥

L-ewwel rittratt: kanun RML ta' 38 tunnellata fil-forti Delimara.
It-tieni rittratt: eżempju ta' kanun Mk VII B.L. ta' 6 pulzieri f'Leighton Battery, l-Awstralja.

Skopri kif l-artillerija żviluppat f'perjodu ta’ kważi 60 sena waqt il-ftuħ speċjali tagħna fl-14 u l-15 ta’ Marzu. Il-biljetti jistgħu jinxtraw minn hawn: https://heritagemalta.mt/store/s88/.

🇬🇧 From the first guns installed in 1880 to the final artillery pieces of 1939, military technology advanced at a remarkable pace.

The massive 38-ton RML gun could fire just one round every four minutes and traverse only 60°. By 1939, the 6-inch breech-loading Mk VII gun could fire an impressive 5–7 rounds per minute, traverse 150°, and reach twice the distance. 💥

🇲🇹 Din it-tikketta żgħira ta' ċavetta tal-metall ġiet mogħtija b’donazzjoni lill-kollezzjoni tagħna fil-Forti Delimara grazzi għas-Sur Simon Cusens! 🗝 Minkejja d-daqs modest tagħha, oġġetti bħal dawn kellhom rwol fil-ħajja ta’ kuljum tal-forti; jiftħu bibien, isakkru l-maħżen, u jgħaddu minn ħafna idejn matul iż-żmien.

🇬🇧 This small metal key tag was recently donated to our collection at Fort Delimara thanks to Mr Simon Cusens! 🗝 While modest in size, objects like this once played a role in the everyday life of the fort; opening doors, securing stores, and passing through many hands over time.
