One of my fondest childhood memories is looking out of my bedroom window and watching Honey Buzzards circling above the valley between Nadur and Xagħra in Gozo as they prepared to roost.

I’ve been mesmerised by these birds ever since, particularly by the incredible variety of plumages and patterns within the same species.

Over the coming week, I’ll be sharing photographs of Honey Buzzards in different plumages, all taken at the same time of year.

Same species. Different colours. One fascinating bird.

I came across this Sedge Warbler | Acrocephalus schoenobaenus | whilst hiking along Bempton Cliffs in June 2026. These little birds are more often heard than seen, so finding one perched out in the open is quite a sight!

This bird is now probably somewhere along its migration route to sub-Saharan Africa, where it will spend the winter.
In Malta, Sedge Warblers are more commonly recorded during spring migration than in autumn. Autumn passage typically begins in mid-August and continues well into October.
