🇲🇹🇵🇹🇪🇺 SECOND CPD CONTINGENT RETURNS FROM PORTUGAL

Members of the second CPD contingent deployed to Portugal have returned to Malta following the completion of their deployment.

The firefighters were welcomed at Malta International Airport by their families and loved ones after supporting their Portuguese counterparts in wildfire operations.

Their deployment formed part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism’s pre-positioning programme, coordinated through DG ECHO.

🚨 SEA RESCUE – PEMBROKE 🚨

Yesterday, CPD rescuers from Station 5 responded to an overturned jet ski off Pembroke.

Two individuals were located, rescued and taken aboard the CPD RHIB Delta 2. Both casualties were transported to the shore at Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq, where they were assessed by a medical team from the Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department and discharged on site.

The CPD would like to thank the Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department, The Malta Police Force and the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) or their collaboration.

🚨 SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATION – BLUE GROTTO

Rescuers from Fire Stations 1, 5 and 8 responded to a search and rescue operation involving five swimmers who became lost at sea while swimming in the Blue Grotto area.

Three of the swimmers managed to make their way safely back to shore, while the remaining two were rescued by CPD rescuers. The two swimmers were brought on board CPD Delta 2 and transferred safely to land.

A medical team from the Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department was also on scene. The swimmers were assessed by medical personnel and, following the assessment, were discharged at the scene.

The CPD would like to thank The Malta Police Force and the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) for their assistance and cooperation throughout the operation.

🇲🇹🇵🇹🇪🇺 RECOGNISING OUR FIREFIGHTERS – PORTUGAL DEPLOYMENT

The Prime Minister of Malta and the Minister for Home Affairs and Security visited the newly refurbished Civil Protection Department Fire Station 3 in Xemxija, where they met and thanked CPD firefighters deployed to Portugal.

Firefighters who have already returned to Malta were present at Station 3, while members of the Maltese contingent still deployed in Portugal joined the visit virtually.

The visit recognised the commitment and professionalism shown by our firefighters while supporting their Portuguese counterparts during the ongoing wildfire season.

The deployment forms part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism’s pre-positioning programme, coordinated through DG ECHO.

🚨 STRUCTURE FIRE – QAWRA 🚨

Firefighters from Stations 1, 2, 3, 4 and 11 responded to a structure fire at a hotel in Qawra.

The fire, located in the hotel’s laundry room on Level -1, was extinguished by CPD firefighters. Due to heavy smoke throughout the building, the hotel was fully evacuated as a precaution.

Ventilation procedures are still ongoing. No injuries have been reported.

A medical team from the Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department, police officers from the 11th Police District and Transport Malta officials assisted during the operation.

🚨 RESCUE – GĦAR LAPSI 🚨

Yesterday afternoon, CPD rescuers from Stations 1 and 5 responded to assist a person requiring medical attention after suffering from heatstroke.

The casualty was assessed on site by a medical team from the Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department before being transferred aboard the CPD RHIB Delta 2 to a safe landing area.

The casualty was subsequently transferred by ambulance to Mater Dei Hospital for further medical treatment.

🇲🇹🇵🇹 PORTUGAL DEPLOYMENT – MOURISCAS WILDFIRE

On 22 August, four members of the Malta Ground Forest Firefighting (MT GFFF) contingent, who were on standby at the Almeirim station, were requested by the Força Especial de Proteção Civil officer in charge to assist in combating a major wildfire in Mouriscas, central Portugal.

The four CPD firefighters deployed alongside FEPC forces and operated within the active fire area, supporting firefighting and containment operations.

At the time, approximately 400 firefighters, 160 fire engines and 14 aerial resources were involved in the operation.

The Maltese contingent is deployed in Portugal as part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism’s wildfire pre-positioning programme, coordinated through the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO).

🇲🇹🇵🇹 CPD FIREFIGHTERS ASSIST IN AROUCA WILDFIRE OPERATION

CPD firefighters deployed in Portugal are currently assisting the Força Especial de Proteção Civil in combating a major wildfire in Arouca.

The operation is mobilising approximately 600 firefighters, who are working together to contain the flames and protect affected communities and surrounding areas.

The Maltese contingent is stationed in Portugal as part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism’s wildfire pre-positioning programme, coordinated through the European Commission’s Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO).

Our firefighters continue to carry out their duties with dedication and professionalism, demonstrating Malta’s commitment to European cooperation and solidarity during emergencies. 🚒
