🇬🇧 This month, we marked the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, a reminder that diversity strengthens our communities every day. 🌍

Through the SPRING (Supporting Pre-Integration Governance) project, funded by AMIF, we believe integration starts with people. Behind every culture is a person with hopes, talents, experiences, and a story worth hearing. By listening to one another and learning from different cultures we can further strengthen dialogue and promote inclusive development.

🇲🇹 Dax-xahar ta’ Mejju, iċċelebrajna l-Jum Dinji għad-Diversità Kulturali għad-Djalogu u l-Iżvilupp, li jfakkarna li d-diversità ssaħħaħ il-komunitajiet tagħna ta’ kuljum. 🌍

Permezz tal-proġett SPRING (Supporting Pre-Integration Governance), iffinanzjat mill-AMIF, nemmnu li l-integrazzjoni tibda min-nies. Wara kull kultura hemm persuna b’tamiet, talenti, esperjenzi, u storja li tixraq li tinstema’. Billi nisimgħu lil xulxin u nitgħallmu minn kulturi differenti, nistgħu nsaħħu aktar id-djalogu u nippromwovu l-iżvilupp inklużiv.

🇬🇧 Why should periods hold Maltese girls back from school or daily life?
Today, we spotlight the experiences of women and girls across our islands, where stigma around menstruation still lingers despite vital progress. Initiatives like the nationwide "End the Stigma. Period!" project, and now we are equipping all secondary schools in Malta and Gozo with free menstrual products which is transforming access and breaking taboos for thousands of students.

The Human Rights Directorate is proud to lead efforts for open conversations, proper education, and affordable hygiene solutions, ensuring no Maltese girl faces difficulty or shame. Together, let's normalise periods and build a healthier, more equal country.

🇲🇹 Għaliex il-menstruwazzjoni għandha żżomm lit-tfajliet Maltin lura mill-iskola jew mill-ħajja ta’ kuljum?

Illum nistgħu nimmaġinaw l-esperjenzi ta’ nisa u tfajliet f’pajjiżna, fejn l-istigma fuq il-menstruwazzjoni għadha teżisti minkejja l-progress importanti li sar. Inizjattivi bħall-proġett nazzjonali “End the Stigma. Period!”, u l-għoti tal-prodotti tal-period jgħinu biex jkissru t-tabù għal eluf ta’ studenti.

Id-Direttorat tad-Drittijiet tal-Bniedem kburi li qed iniedi diskussjonijiet mftuħa, edukazzjoni adekwata, u soluzzjonijiet ta’ iġjene affordabbli, biex l-ebda tfajla f’Malta ma tispiċċa f’diffikultà jew mistħija. Flimkien, ejja nifmhu li l-menstruwazzjoni hija process naturali. B’hekk ikollna pajjiż aktar b’saħħtu u aktar ugwali.

Last week’s Business Breakfast, marking IDAHOT+ 🏳️‍🌈, brought together stakeholders to reflect on the role of media in shaping social norms and public understanding 🗞️🎙️.

Discussions highlighted the progress achieved through increased visibility, while also acknowledging the challenges of today’s digital landscape 💻 where narratives can both foster inclusion and reinforce harmful biases.

A timely reminder of the responsibility media holds in shaping more inclusive and informed societies 🌍.

-

Il-Konferenza tal-ġimgħa li għaddiet, li mmarkat IDAHOT+ 🏳️‍🌈, ġabret flimkien diversi msieħba biex jirriflettu fuq ir-rwol tal-midja fil-formazzjoni tan-normi soċjali u l-fehim pubbliku 🗞️🎙️.

Id-diskussjonijiet enfasizzaw il-progress li sar permezz ta’ viżibbiltà akbar, filwaqt li rrikonoxxew l-isfidi tal-ambjent diġitali tal-lum 💻 fejn in-narrattivi jistgħu kemm jippromwovu l-inklużjoni kif ukoll isaħħu preġudizzji qarrieqa.

Tfakkira importanti tar-responsabbiltà li għandha l-midja biex tifforma soċjetajiet aktar inklużivi u infurmati 🌍.

The Human Rights Directorate was proud to support the Gender and Sexualities Conference 2026, organised by the Department of Gender and Sexualities at the University of Malta, held on the 6th and 7th May.

The conference brought together researchers, practitioners and students to explore critical themes including equality, inclusion, justice, law and policy, and the lived realities of diverse communities.

Through keynote addresses, parallel sessions, and networking, participants engaged in meaningful discussions on advancing gender equality and human rights—both in Malta and beyond.
The Human Rights Directorate remains committed to supporting initiatives that foster dialogue, research, and collaboration in the areas of gender and s*xualities.

We congratulate the organisers and all contributors for delivering such an insightful and impactful event and look forward to seeing this work published on Astarte: Mediterranean Journal of Gender and Sexualities

Racism and hate speech, in any form, must never be normalised and have no place in our society. Our work at the Human Rights Directorate through the National Action Plan Against Racism (2025-2030) continues to focus on building an inclusive society where democracy is upheld through respect, equality, and human rights for all, regardless of s*x, “race,” colour, ethnic or social origin, language, religion or belief, or other opinion.

24/04/2026

Matul il-Konferenza Annwali GEMSAP, ġie ppreżentat ir-Rapport Annwali 2025 u ngħatat ħarsa ġenerali tal-implimentazzjoni f'nofs it-terminu, b’63% tal-miżuri mwettqa. Dan il-progress jirrifletti kollaborazzjoni kontinwa bejn il-partijiet ikkonċernati u impenn komuni biex l-ugwaljanza bejn il-ġeneri tiġi integrata fil-politiki u fil-prattika.

Permezz tad-diskussjonijiet tal-panel, ġie esplorat messaġġ ewlieni: id-distakki bejn il-ġeneri fl-impjiegi, fil-pensjonijiet u fit-tmexxija huma marbuta bejniethom u mhux separati. Dawn jiffurmaw katina ta’ inugwaljanza matul iċ-ċiklu tal-ħajja: id-distakk fl-impjiegi jista’ jwassal għal dħul aktar baxx u interruzzjonijiet fil-karriera; id-distakk fid-dħul inaqqas l-akkumulazzjoni tal-pensjoni; u d-distakk fit-tmexxija jista’ jillimita l-influwenza fuq il-politiki meħtieġa biex jingħalqu d-distakki l-oħra.

Il-ġurnata ġiet imsaħħa wkoll permezz ta' diskussjonijiet fi gruppi dwar fejn qegħdin illum, x’għadu jeħtieġ jinbidel, u l-ambizzjonijiet li rridu niksbu nilħqu ’l quddiem. Id-direzzjoni hija ċara: inkomplu nibnu fuq dak li qed jaħdem, nindirizzaw l-ostakli persistenti, u niżguraw li r-riżultati tal-ugwaljanza jinħassu f’kull stadju tal-ħajja.

During the GEMSAP Annual Conference, we presented the Annual Report 2025 and shared a mid-term overview of implementation, with 63% of measures completed. This progress reflects ongoing collaboration across stakeholders and a shared commitment to embed gender equality across policy and practice.

We then explored a key message through the panel discussions: gender gaps in employment, pensions and leadership are connected not separate. They form a lifecycle inequality chain: employment gaps can lead to lower earnings and interrupted careers; earnings gaps reduce pension accumulation; and leadership gaps can limit influence over the very policies needed to close the other gaps.

The day was strengthened by thoughtful group discussions on where we stand today, what still needs to shift, and the ambitions we want to achieve moving forward. The direction is clear: keep building on what works, tackle persistent barriers, and ensure equality outcomes are felt across every stage of life.

The Human Rights Directorate, in partnership with the Malta Police Community Cohesion Team and the Migrant Women Association Malta ( ), convened a key stakeholders’ meeting to reinforce collaborative efforts. The meeting enabled an open exchange on concrete measures to address the persistent discrimination experienced by migrant women, while strengthening institutional responses to better safeguard their wellbeing and rights.

This collaborative initiative represented an important step forward in advancing the SPRING project objectives, contributing to ongoing efforts to foster a safer, fairer, and more inclusive Malta where every woman is treated with dignity and respect.

Id-Direttorat għad-Drittijiet tal-Bniedem, flimkien mat-tim ta’ Koeżjoni tal-Pulizija fil-Komunità f'Malta u l-Migrant Women Association Malta (MWAM), iltaqgħu sabiex isaħħu l-kollaborazzjoni ta' bejniethom. Il-laqgħa ppermettiet skambju miftuħ ta’ ideat dwar miżuri konkreti biex tiġi indirizzata d-diskriminazzjoni li n-nisa migranti għadhom jesperjenzaw, kif ukoll biex l-istituzzjonijiet issaħħu l-inizjattivi u l-mekkaniżmi sabiex id-drittijiet u l-benesseri tagħhom ikunu ssalvagwardjati.

Din l-inizjattiva kollaborattiva rrappreżentat pass importanti ’l quddiem fit-twettiq tal-għanijiet tal-proġett SPRING, u kkontribwiet għall-isforzi kontinwi biex tinbena Malta aktar sigura, ġusta u inklużiva, fejn kull mara tiġi ttrattata bid-dinjità u r-rispett li jistħoqqilha.
