The construction of the so-called Berlin Wall started 65 years ago today, on 13 August 1961. It was built by the regime of the (Eastern) “German Democratic Republic” to stop the economically motivated mass-emigration to the (Western) Federal Republic of Germany. The Berlin Wall separated the city (and subsequently the two Germanies, becoming part of the “Iron Curtain” dividing Europe) for more than 28 years, during which approximately 140 people died trying to escape the East within Berlin alone.
Today’s date is a reminder of the importance of freedom, diversity and democracy, but also a sign of hope, as the fall of the Berlin Wall was the result of a peaceful revolution by GDR citizens in 1989.
