Our office in collaboration with the Malta Crafts Foundation , Union Intellectual Property Office - EUIPO and the European Commission organised a seminar on Geographical Indications for Crafts and Industrial Products. As from 1 December 2025, producers across the European Union and beyond can apply to register their craft and industrial products as geographical indications (GIs) under Regulation (EU) 2023/2411. To qualify for geographical indication protection, products must
• have a strong connection to their geographical origin (place, region or country)
• have a quality, reputation, or other characteristic linked to a specific place, region, or country
• include at least 1 stage of production carried out in the specified area

This seminar was an important step to create awareness amongst Maltese craftspersons through various presentations as well as a hands-on exercise and group discussion.

MT: F’Malta, ix-xogħol artiġjanali fil-materjal prezzjuż ivarja mix-xogħol intrikat u dettaljat tal-filigranu għal dak fin bil-lavur tad-deheb u l-fidda, fost oħrajn. Dan jinkludi wkoll disinji kontemporanji apparti dawk tradizzjonali. Dan l-artiġjanat baqa’ ħaj grazzi għad-dedikazzjoni u l-passjoni tal-artiġjani. Din is-sengħa tinħadem l-iktar f’workshops artiġjanali żgħar, fejn it-tagħlim jgħaddi minn ġenerazzjoni għal oħra. Dan is-settur baqa’ wieħed minn dawk l-aktar konsistenti matul is-snin.

Jekk inti artiġjan u m’intix irreġistrat fir-Reġistru tal-Artiġjanat, issa huwa ż-żmien li tirreġistra. Skopri iktar billi tmur fuq: craftsregister.gov.mt

EN: Today we share with you the second videoclip of our series promoting the artisanal sector in Malta. Craftsmanship of precious materials takes us from intricate filigree to fine gold and silver work, amongst others. Nowadays it also encompasses traditional and modern designs. This work remains alive thanks to the passionate work of artisans. This craft thrives in small artisan workshops, where skill is passed on from the previous generation. This sector remains one of the most consistent over the years. If you are a craftsperson, or know one, and you are not registered in the Crafts Register, now is the time to do so.

The Commerce Department within the Ministry for the Economy, Enterprise and Strategic Projects, together with the Malta Crafts Foundation and in collaboration with European Union Intellectual Property Office - EUIPO and the European Commission's DG GROW, is organising an information seminar for craftspersons interested in knowing about how the new Geographical Indications (GIs) for Crafts can be used by local artisan groups.

GI is a special label that shows that a product comes from a specific place and is made using local skills and traditions. Up to now, this EU label was given to food, wine, and spirits. Now, craft and industrial products are also protected under this new EU system.

Would you like to know more about GIs? Then this information session is for you. Experts from the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the European Commission and the Malta Crafts Foundation will be demonstrating how the GIs will work, and how Maltese artisan groups can apply for such label.

A detailed programme will be sent upon registration.
