Within the walls of Casa Rocca Piccola, each artwork offers a glimpse into history, lineage, and European influence.

This piece portrays Maria Amalia of Poland and Saxony (1724–1760), whose royal court in Naples and Spain was attended by members of the Maltese nobility, a reminder of the island’s close ties to European courts.

Part of our series exploring the artworks found throughout the palace.

Beneath Casa Rocca Piccola, every moment underground told a different story.

In these shelters, time slowed. Families created routines in the dark, sharing food, stories, and quiet resilience while the uncertainty above continued. What began as refuge became a temporary way of life, shaped by endurance and an unbreakable human spirit.

This is Part 3 of our 5-part series exploring the bomb shelters beneath the palace.
A closer look at how people adapted, coped, and carried on underground.

The de Piro family tree at Casa Rocca Piccola is not merely decorative, it is a carefully composed representation of heritage. Each element carries meaning: the lions denote courage and fortitude, while the crowns signify noble rank acquired over generations.

Such imagery allowed families to convey their legacy, achievements, and social standing in a way that transcended words, ensuring their story could be recognised and remembered across time.

An enduring testament to the values and history of a noble Maltese family.πŸ§‘β€πŸ§‘β€πŸ§’β€πŸ§’
