Roman Remains in the Cittadella

When visiting the ancient site, one can observe various remains from the Roman period. Beneath the side archway found in Cathedral Square, there is a series of large stones that possibly formed part of a wall dating back to that era.

Fl-1787, Jean Hoel iddokumenta statwa Rumana ta’ mara mlibbsa b’ilbies imdendel, li kellha pedestall b’iskrizzjoni, eżatt fid-daħla taċ-Ċittadella. L-istoriċi u l-arkeoloġi jissuġġerixxu li din l-istatwa tirrappreżenta lil Julia Augusta, mart Awgustu, liebsa ta’ Ceres, l-alla tal-agrikultura u l-abbundanza. Illum, din l-istatwa tifforma parti mill-kollezzjoni tal-Mużew ta’ Għawdex ta’ Heritage Malta.

A Roman Imperial Statue at the entrance of Cittadella.
At the entrance of Citadella, Jean Hoel, in 1787 documents a Roman female draped statue with a base having an inscription. Historians and archaeologist hint that this statue represents Julia Augusta, wife of Augustus, dressed as Ceres, the goddess of agriculture and abundance. Today, this forms parts of the Gozo Museum Collection run by Heritage Malta.

L-istoriku Ruman Titus Livius (59BC – 17AD), fix-xogħol tiegħu Ab Urbe Condita Libri (L-Istorja ta’ Ruma), jirreferi għal dan l-episodju importanti, li l-istoriċi moderni jiddatawh lura għas-sena 218 Q.K.
Fiċ-Ċittadella, ilhom isiru skavi arkeoloġiċi minn żmien għal żmien sa mis-snin tmenin tas-seklu dsatax. Dawn l-iskoperti jipprovdu evidenza qawwija li s-sit kien abitat matul Żmien ir-Rumani.
Fost is-sejbiet minn dan il-perjodu nsibu kitbiet imnaqqxa, statwi tal-irħam, frammenti arkitettoniċi minn bini pubbliku, partijiet minn ħitan, u kwantità kbira u diversa ta’ fuħħar — li kollha jgħinu biex jirrakkontaw l-istorja tal-passat Ruman ta’ Għawdex.

Did you know that Malta and Gozo were conquered by the Romans during the Punic Wars?

The Roman historian Titus Livius (59BC-17AD), in his work Ab Urbe Condita Libri (History of Rome), refers to this important episode, which modern historians date to 218 B.C.
At the Cittadella, archaeological excavations have been taking place from time to time since the 1880s. These discoveries provide strong evidence that the site was occupied during the Roman era.
Finds from this period include inscriptions, marble statues, architectural fragments from public buildings, sections of walls, and a large quantity and quilities of pottery — all helping to tell the story of Gozo’s Roman past.

Belt b’iktar minn 4,000 sena ta’ storja.

L-arkeoloġija taċ-Ċittadella tindika li s-sit x'aktarx kien abitat sa minn Żmien il-Bronż, fatt li jagħmlu wieħed mill-eqdem siti fil-Gżejjer Maltin li kienu abitati kontinwament. Xhieda ta’ dan huma s-silos ta' Żmien il-Bronż li jinsabu fid-daħla tas-sit u li ġew skoperti fl-1859 minn A.A. Caruana. Fl-2015, waqt l-iskavar ta’ wieħed mis-silos li kien għadu intatt, instabu frammenti ta’ fuħħar li jmur lura għall-fażi ta’ Borġ in-Nadur c. 1500 Q.K.

A city with over 4,000 years of history

The archaeology of Cittadella indicates that the site has most likely been inhabited since the Bronze Age, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in the Maltese Islands. The evidence for are the bronze age silos at the entrance of the site discovered in 1859 by AA. Caruana. In 2015, fragments of Borġ in-Nadur Phase pottery c. 1500 BC were found during the excavation of one of the intact silos.

Applications Open for the Gozo Regional Carnival 2027

Applications are now open for the 2027 Gozo Regional Carnival, which will take place between Saturday, 30 January and Tuesday, 9 February 2027.

Applications may be submitted online until 15 July 2026 through the official website of the Ministry for Gozo: https://ghawdex.gov.mt/

On the website, applicants will find:

• The Guidelines
• The Official Regulations

Interested individuals, groups, and companies may also apply to express their interest in being entrusted with the construction of the King Carnival Float 2027.

The Cittadella Visitors’ Centre

Housed in two old water reservoirs built in the 1870’s in part of the Cittadella Ditch. The Cittadella Masterplan recommended that the two reservoirs be converted into a Visitors’ Centre to offer the much needed interpretation facilities at Cittadella. Conversion works were undertaken as part of the EU co-funded project for the Implementation of the Cittadella Masterplan Recommendations.

The Visitors’ Centre is divided into two main areas. The first area offers a number of interactive touch screens and printed panels which deal with various aspects of Cittadella including the evolution of Cittadella, nature, military history, ecclesiastical history and civil history. The other area was converted into a surround theatre where visitors can watch an eight minute video on the salient moments of the millenarian history of Cittadella. All information is available in eight languages.

Skema ta’ għajnuna finanzjarja lil individwi jew organizzazzjonijiet sabiex jikru proprjetà fejn jinbnew karrijiet tal-karnival jew maskri grotteski għall-Karnival Reġjonali ta’ Għawdex 2027.

Bl-għan li jkompli jissaħħaħ il-Karnival f’Għawdex bħala attività kulturali li tattira udjenza minn Għawdex, Malta u minn barra, u għalhekk ukoll tagħti kontribut ekonomiku lil Għawdex, il-Ministeru għal Għawdex u l-Ippjanar qed jerġa’ jniedi skema li permezz tagħha se jgħin lil individwi jew organizzazzjonijiet jikru proprjetà li tista’ tintuża biex jinbnew karrijiet tal-karnival jew maskri grotteski.

Kull applikant jista’ jingħata għotja sa massimu ta’ ħamsa u għoxrin elf ewro (€25,000) fis-sena jekk jibni karrijiet fis-Sezzjonijiet A u B, u sa massimu ta’ għaxart elef ewro (€10,000) fis-sena jekk jibni maskri grotteski jew karrijiet fis-Sezzjoni Ċ. Fiż-żewġ każijiet, l-għotja tkopri l-kera tal-post.

L-Iskema se tkun miftuħa għal xahar mid-data tal-pubblikazzjoni.

L-applikazzjoni għandha ssir biss online fil-website https://gozo.gov.mt . Fil-website wieħed isib mehmużin il-Linji Gwida u r-Regolamenti tal-Iskema, inklużi l-kriterji ta’ eliġibbiltà.

A financial assistance scheme is being launched to support individuals and organisations in renting a property where floats or grotesque masks can be constructed for the Gozo Regional Carnival 2027.

With the aim of further strengthening Carnival in Gozo as a cultural event that attracts audiences from Gozo, Malta, and abroad—while also contributing to Gozo’s economy—the Ministry for Gozo and Planning is reintroducing a scheme that helps individuals and organisations cover the cost of renting premises to build carnival floats or grotesque masks.

Each applicant may receive a grant of up to twenty-five thousand euros (€25,000) per year for the construction of floats in Sections A and B, and up to ten thousand euros (€10,000) per year for the construction of grotesque masks or floats in Section C. In both cases, the grant is intended to cover the rental costs of the premises.

The scheme will remain open for one month from the date of its publication.

Applications must be submitted exclusively online through the website https://gozo.gov.mt, where the Scheme’s Guidelines and Regulations, including the eligibility criteria, are available.
