The annual commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust will be celebrated on Saturday, January 27th 2018. On this date in 1945, the concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, considered the largest concentration camp ever, was liberated by the Allies from the N***s. Some 6 million people have perished under Hitler’s ‘Final Solution’, with an estimated 1.1 million being children. This commemoration intends to remember the millions of innocent lives that were terminated at Auschwitz-Birkenau and to keep alive the memory of the victims of the numerous genocides that unfortunately tarnish the story of our humanity. Simultaneously this day seeks to share a message of love, hope and unity aiming to bring an end to racial violence. The theme chosen by UNESCO for 2018, ‘Holocaust Remembrance and Education: Our shared responsibility’, underscores the relevance to learn about and remember the Holocaust. It might be easy to ignore the massacres that took place decades of years ago, massacres that didn’t directly affect our own country, but we are all part of humanity. These were human beings like ourselves who had the right to live like all of us. Hate crimes motivated by racism or religion are not an uncommon phenomena and that’s why the commemoration of this day is still very much relevant. No one wants to repeat the atrocities and crimes against humanity. Denying any of these crimes would probably lead to further crimes. Educating about the causes, course and consequences of this dark page in our world’s history would instil in our children a culture of hope, peace and love against any ideology of hatred.

What started as a suggestion by the ESCC for a commemorative activity on the occasion of the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, turned into a full-scale special morning assembly by the Gozo College Rabat Primary. The assembly kicked off with some of the students putting on the Jewish star, with the rest wearing another tag symbolizing the different races that experienced the reality of World War II. Two students in the concentration camp striped shirt introduced the activity and explained the significance of the event. Excerpts from Anne Frank’s Diary were read in different languages, mainly in Maltese, Italian, German, Croat, French, Japanese and English, in itself a reflection of the significance of unity in diversity. The school then paid tribute to the millions of children who died in different genocides across the world. Students were asked to define the significance of peace before observing a minute of silence in memory of the children who suffered and died innocently in the hands of different perpetrators. Towards the end of the activity, the national anthem was sung and the Maltese flag was flown at half-must. The ESCC would like to thank the Gozo College Principal, the EO for Gozo, Mr. Lelio Spiteri, the Rabat primary staff and all involved in the organisation of this activity.
