Fort St Angelo

Fort St Angelo Fort St. Angelo is the heart of the Grand Harbour, the most epic setting in Malta. Fort St Angelo's intrinsic value for the Maltese Islands knows no comparison.

It is the boldest memorial of the strategic importance of these tiny islands and its control meant effective rule of the Maltese Islands during at least the past thousand years. The site attracted attention since antiquity, while a robust stronghold must have been established by the end of Byzantine rule. Legend has it that Count Roger founded a chapel therein in honour of Archangel Michael (St An

gelo) in 1091. By 1274, Fort St Angelo, or castrum maris as known at the time, consisted of two enclosures, each demarcated by an enceinte stiffened with round towers. It was thereby commonly administered by loyal subjects of the Sicilian overlords. After 1530 the Order of St John turned the castrum maris, christened Fort St Angelo, into its headquarters and remodelled its aging land front. The fortress played a determining role during the Great Siege of 1565. It coordinated the day to day defensive and offensive strategies, housed the main provisions' depot, bombarded the Ottomans’ makeshift batteries nearby and spoiled the besiegers’ plan to conquer Senglea on 15 July. In 1690 the Flemish military engineer Carlos Grunenbergh spearheaded the stronghold’s transformation into a forceful gunpowder work, including four gun platforms with a staggering capacity of 48 artillery pieces aimed at the entrance of the Grand Harbour. The Fort's vocation as guardian of the Grand Harbour stood unchallenged with the settling in of the British colonisers after 1800. Its firepower received a major upgrade in 1872, but was quickly rendered obsolete by the constantly ameliorated artillery technology. Consequently, in 1906 the Royal Navy's Mediterranean Fleet relocated its command hub within. Fort St Angelo offered protection against the Axis air raids during World War II, while the last detachment of foreign forces to bid farewell to the unsinkable fortress of Malta in March 1979 marched out of its towering walls. Since 2016, Fort St Angelo has been open to visitors on a daily basis, including the Upper Area which is administered by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

🎉 Il-ħames mitt oġġett fil-kollezzjoni!

L-aħħar akkwist tagħna hija l-kresta ta' HMS ST ANGELO, magħmula mill-bronż. Il-fortizza ġiet uffiċjalment imsemmija mill-ġdid fl-1 ta’ Lulju 1933, wara talba mingħand il-Fizzjali Kmandant, il-Kaptan Creagh.

Il-kresta mimlija simboliżmu, u tinkludi elementi mill-arma ta’ Gran Mastru de Valette flimkien mas-salib ta’ tmien ponot, riflessjoni qawwija tal-wirt Malti tagħna.⚓

🎉 The 500th object in the collection!

Our latest acquisition is a brass ship badge from HMS St Angelo. The fort was formally renamed on 1st July 1933, following a request by Commanding Officer Capt. Creagh. The badge itself is rich in symbolism, incorporating elements of Grand Master de Valette’s coat of arms alongside the iconic eight-pointed cross, a powerful nod to our heritage. ⚓
