France has opened its first traditionally designed stone Hindu temple in Bussy-Saint-Georges, near Paris. The BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir was formally inaugurated and consecrated by Mahant Swami Maharaj on September 6, 2026. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also joined the ceremony through video conference. The temple was built using hand-carved stones brought from India, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern French engineering. A 13-day Festival of Culture is being held from September 2 to 14 to mark the opening. More than 5,500 people also took part in a Jal Yatra on the River Seine, using 11 decorated boats. The temple is the largest traditionally built Hindu temple of its kind in mainland Europe and is expected to become a centre for worship, culture and community activities.
