🌊 How can we effectively address the mounting challenges facing small-scale fisheries?

Collaboration is the key to sustainability. Non-State Actors (NSAs) such as NGOs, fisher associations, and community groups play a crucial role in addressing issues like overfishing, limited infrastructure, and market access.

This week, the ECOFISH Programme is hosting a validation workshop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together 8 countries from the South-West Indian Ocean (SWIO) region to:

✅ Validate findings on the role of NSAs in sustainable fisheries management,
✅ Strengthen partnerships between NSAs and governments, and
✅ Lay the groundwork for a regional NSA platform to drive long-term collaboration.

💬 What strategies do you think can best strengthen partnerships to empower small-scale fisheries? Share your ideas!

🌍 Did you know? Across the region, fishery resources are often underutilized, with some countries exploiting less than 50% of their potential. For instance, in Madagascar alone, 130,447 tonnes of fishery products were recorded in 2023—highlighting both opportunities and challenges in sustainable fisheries management.

📊 Reliable data is the key to change. ECOFISH is conducting a series of workshops across the region to empower national fishery observers with practical skills. The ongoing workshop in Toamasina, Madagascar, is equipping observers from Comoros and Madagascar to gather critical data on fish captures, bycatch, and marine interactions—essential for sustainable management.

👩‍💻👨‍💻 Fishery observers play a pivotal role in unlocking the potential of fisheries in the Indian Ocean region, helping to protect biodiversity and secure livelihoods for fishing communities.

🌊🐟 How Can We Fill Africa’s Fisheries Gap? 🌍

With Africa’s population projected to surge to 1.7 billion by 2030 and 2.5 billion by 2050, meeting the continent’s seafood demands sustainably is more crucial than ever. Currently, marine production in Africa stands at 7 million tonnes, but projections show a significant gap, requiring 13 million tonnes by 2030 and 19 million by 2050 to maintain today’s per capita consumption.

At the programme, we are committed to addressing these future needs by advocating for sustainable resource management. Our ongoing validation workshop in Madagascar is a prime example of our work in action. Here, we are presenting the findings of an assessment report on the economic and financial contribution of the small-scale fisheries sector. These critical data will empower Malagasy stakeholders to make informed, strategic decisions for a more and productive fisheries sector, aligning with long-term national and regional goals.

We must shift our focus from short-term revenue generation to long-term ecosystem capacity enhancement. Only then can we close the production gap and safeguard Africa’s marine resources for generations to come.
