Dr the Honourable Avinash Ramtohul, Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation, welcomed Mr Daren Tang, Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), for a courtesy call at the Ministry this morning, in the presence of senior officials.
Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between Mauritius and WIPO, particularly on how Intellectual Property (IP) can serve as a catalyst for innovation, entrepreneurship and economic growth in an era increasingly driven by Artificial Intelligence.
Mr Daren Wang highlighted the importance of bringing IP closer to businesses and entrepreneurs, particularly AI start-ups, so that they can better protect their innovations, leverage their intellectual assets and use IP as a tool to grow and become more competitive.
The discussions also explored WIPO’s potential support for incubators, mentoring and capacity building for Mauritian entrepreneurs, as well as opportunities to foster the development and application of AI across various sectors.
Minister Ramtohul further emphasised that the time is right for Mauritius to work closely with WIPO towards crafting a new Intellectual Property Strategy adapted to the opportunities and realities of the AI era.
The meeting reaffirmed the shared ambition to strengthen the innovation ecosystem in Mauritius and empower local entrepreneurs to transform ideas, technology and creativity into sustainable economic value.
