The ecological Mauritius Aquarium was opened in 1982 and it was the first time many nationals and international visitors were given a glimpse of the marvels of the surrounding ocean, all under one roof. This unique aquarium in Mauritius was started based on the Bouquet family’s passion for the marine life and is still owned and managed by the family. The Mauritius Aquarium receives no on-going rev

enue funding and is therefore totally dependent upon ticket sales and income from the on-site shop and café to cover the costs of running the project and carrying out its education, conservation and research work. The Mauritius Aquarium has fast become one of the highlights of educational attractions in Mauritius.

For a long time sharks were misunderstood and vilified. But, this outdated view is fading fast. Over the past 20 years we've seen a huge positive shift in attitudes towards sharks.

Today we're grateful to have a large (and ever growing) group of passionate shark supporters from around the world. And many occasions throughout the year, dedicated to uniting like-minded individuals and organizations in celebration of this incredible group of animals. Shark Awareness Day is one of these.
Sharks play an integral role in keeping our ocean's healthy. They do this by keeping other populations in check and preying on the sick and old. This prevents the spread of disease and improves the gene pool.
