About TCCPM

The decision to set up a Tamil Chambers of Commerce was taken at a meeting of the Youth wing of the Mauritius Tamil Temples Federation in October 2001. The organization was effectively founded in 2002 by a group of young individuals who were mostly members of the Youth Wing of the Mauritius Tamil Temples Federation. All the other organizations in the community supported the initiative. There was a consensus that there was a need to regroup the main players in commerce and professionals.

The community needed an organization to take care of its business community and promote entrepreneurship. Additionally, it was clear that in order to promote socio-economic integration of the Tamil community in the nation-building process, members of the community needed to become economically independent. At the same time and forward looking, there is also the need to prepare the younger generations for opportunities in the new knowledge economy and in that sense needed to encourage the development of professionals in the younger generations of the community. From thereon, the organization was set up to stand on its own feet.

The main task of the founder members was to set up the basic infrastructure and structure for the organization. To that effect, an executive committee was formed and the latter started to work on an action plan and draft a constitution. Through several group activities and workshops in various subcommunities around the country, different areas of opportunities were identified and the group started its activities.
