Ile aux Benitiers
The island of Ile aux Benitiers is situated in the South-East of Mauritius at about 500 meters from La Gaulette village. The island has been so named because of it's resemblance to the Bénitier, a seashell which is straight on one side and semi-circular on the other.
The island is flat, made of sand and coral, 2 kilometres in length and 500 metres wide and has a coconut plantation scattered all over. It has been on private lease since 1927. This little jewel offers splendid beaches with an idyllic lagoon, however water sports are prohibited in its lagoons which accommodate a rich biodiversity of flora and fauna. Some dolphins which live in the vicinity of the Ile aux Benitiers can be closely watched almost everyday with the help of some boat operators of the region who also offer small excursions inside the island. Besides being a little paradise spot, the island is also a sanctuary to a few migratory seabirds.
