Celebrating soccer ⚽️, a win 🎉 and 250 years of freedom! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

This morning, June 13, we welcomed young soccer players and their coaches from the Mauritius Football Association to the Ambassador’s residence to watch the replay of the USA-Paraguay 2026 World Cup match, to celebrate Freedom250 and the United States as co-host of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Charge d’Affaires Craig Halbmaier shared that “teamwork, discipline, and respect are not just football skills. They are life skills.” During our discussion, the youth connected these same values to their schools, communities, and future aspirations.

As the United States marks 250 years of independence, the event highlighted how “the spirit of the game and the spirit of freedom go together,” and how young people can be leaders both on the field and in their communities for the next 250 years.

🐝✨ From classroom champions to national finalists, what an incredible journey!

Congratulations to all the participants, finalists, and winners of the 19th National Spelling Bee Competition!

U.S. Embassy Port Louis was proud to support this exciting event promoting the English language.

Rooted in the American tradition of the iconic Scripps National Spelling Bee, this competition inspires young people to expand their vocabulary, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love of learning. As the United States celebrates Freedom250; the 250th anniversary of American independence, we also celebrate the values of education, opportunity, curiosity, and the freedom to learn that continue to drive American innovation and leadership.

A special thank you to the English-Speaking Union, a long-standing and valued U.S. Embassy partner in advancing English language learning and educational excellence, and to the MCB for its continued commitment to supporting youth through education.

We also extend our appreciation to Madeline Borger, our Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Mentor, who served as a pronouncer for the American pronunciation of each competition word. Her dedication to English language teaching and mentorship continues to inspire students and educators alike.

The U.S. Embassy remains committed to promoting English language learning and teaching through educator professional development programs, OPEN online courses, U.S. exchange programs, and workshops and activities at our American Spaces in Mauritius and Rodrigues.

To every participant: keep reading, keep learning, and keep challenging yourself. Today's spelling bee could be tomorrow's scholarship, leadership opportunity, or global adventure! 🌎📚🚀

Protecting Shared Interests Through Financial Crime Cooperation

Congratulations to our 50 participants from Mauritius and Seychelles who successfully completed a week-long training to strengthen advanced skills investigating and prosecuting complex financial crimes!

U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Craig Halbmaier underscored the direct U.S. interest in this cooperation, “Strong financial crime enforcement in the Indian Ocean region protects American businesses, secures trade relationships, and helps ensure that transnational criminal networks cannot exploit these economies to harm U.S. interests.”

The Director General of the Mauritius Revenue Authority Rohit Ramnawaz, the Commissioner of the Mauritius Police Force Rampersad Sooroojbelly, and other officials attended the event, which was made possible by a partnership between the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) and the FBI – Federal Bureau of Investigation, and co-hosted by the Mauritius Revenue Authority.

This workshop is part of a targeted U.S. effort to build investigative and prosecutorial ability to combat financial crimes, money laundering, and transnational criminal threats in Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar, and Comoros, countries that serve as important partners for U.S. trade and investment in the Indian Ocean region.

Throughout the week, FBI experts shared international best practices, practical exercises, and real-world case studies. The workshop also fostered valuable exchanges of expertise and experiences among the participants.

This session marks the sixth workshop in an ongoing series continuing every 60 days through 2027, a concrete, results-oriented investment in regional stability that directly supports American commercial and security interests.

The United States speaks Creole too?

Chargé d’Affaires Craig Halbmaier was pleased to meet with native Mauritian Dr. Fabiola Henri and her students from the University at Buffalo (SUNY) and welcome her U.S. funded linguistics research team to Mauritius.

Supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), the project brings U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to Creole-speaking communities to conduct field-based research on Creole languages, document linguistic and cultural traditions, and collaborate with local academic and community partners.

During their five-week stay in Mauritius, the team will explore the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of Mauritian Creole while advancing scientific research, educational exchange, and cross-cultural understanding.

The U.S. Embassy is proud to support initiatives that strengthen ties between the United States and Mauritius through research, education, and people-to-people engagement.

Did you know?

The United States has a native Creole speaking population! Moun Kréyòl la Lwizyàn is a Louisiana French ethnic group descended from the inhabitants of colonial Louisiana during the periods of French and Spanish rule, before it became a part of the United States. Louisiana is known as the “Creole State” and showcases an exciting blend of French, Spanish, English, African, and Native American influences.

People-to-people exchanges are one of the keys to strengthening the U.S.-Mauritius relationship, and there’s no better way of doing it than with students and exchange programs – giving youth the opportunity to experience the best of both countries firsthand.

U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Craig Halbmaier and EducationUSA adviser Iqbal Maherally met with the Minister of Tertiary Education, Science, and Research, Dr. Kaviraj Sukon, to discuss initiatives in higher education and technical training.

Conversations focused on expanding academic and academia-industry collaboration between the United States and Mauritius, exploring new partnership opportunities, and identifying ways the U.S. Embassy can support the Mauritian Government's vision for education and research excellence.

We look forward to working closely with the Government of Mauritius to create meaningful opportunities that benefit students, researchers, and communities in both our nations, strengthening U.S.-Mauritius Educational Partnerships.

Strengthening justice systems together with U.S. technology and innovation!

The U.S. Embassy was pleased to deliver a new Case Management System to Mauritius's Director of Public Prosecutions. This technology will help prosecutors track complex cases and combat serious crimes, including financial crimes, cybercrimes, trafficking in persons, and narcotics trafficking, more efficiently. The system was made possible by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, as well as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

Director of Public Prosecutions Abdool Rashid Ahmine, Mauritian Police Force Commissioner Rampersad Sooroojebally, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Caleb Goddard, and Department of State International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Deputy Director Merideth Manella participated in the ceremony.

Thank you to UNODC - United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and our Mauritian partners for this important collaboration.

This partnership continues to demonstrate our shared commitment to the rule of law.

Together, we're building safer communities!
