Facing the bay of Mahebourg and at the foot of the Lion Mountain, FERNEY is a historical and natural treasure of Mauritius, home to one of the last endemic forests of the island. Our ambition is to position and develop the 3,100 Ha private domain as a hub for sustainable development, working on environmental education, healthy living and responsible Agro development.

♟️ Chess is much more than a 1,500 years old game. It teaches patience, critical thinking, foresight and the value of every decision we make in a limited time.

At FERNEY, we aim at bringing colleagues together beyond the workplace while developing valuable skills such as strategic thinking, time management and a healthy competitive spirit.

To mark the 2026 International Chess Day, chess enthusiasts gathered for a light session of friendly competition and learning, led by Alexandre Hervé. With nearly 15 colleagues already having started or resumed their chess journey, the momentum is growing.

And this is only the beginning, with plans already underway for the first FERNEY Chess Tournament next year.

Because in chess, as in life, success is often built through a series of well-calculated moves.

Join us for a half-day workshop to see how ecological restoration methods are used for preserving one of Mauritius’ last remaining pristine forests. You'll discover how Ecosystem-based Adaptation actions protects our communities and why restoring native habitats is vital for a sustainable, climate-resilient future.

What's on the agenda?
• Guided visit through the Ferney Conservation Zone
• Introduction to Mauritius’ unique biodiversity
• Discover forest restoration in Ferney and implementation of Ecosystem-based Adaptation actions
• Hands-on activities helping restoration work
• Light lunch in a natural outdoor setting

💰Registration fee: Rs 100 (symbolic contribution, free light lunch)

👟 Important information:
As this is an outdoor, hands-on experience, participants are advised to wear comfortable outdoors clothing, closed shoes and bring adequate drinking water. No prior experience required.

🌱 Strengthening regional food systems through collaboration

Last month, Sophie Gordon Gentil from FERNEY Zardin Sela had the privilege of participating in a week-long workshop in Madagascar as part of the PROJECT ITALIQ initiative (Innovations Technologiques et Organisationnelles pour des Aliments de Qualité).

Le Zardin Sela was invited as a case study in recognition of its efforts to support agroecological agriculture and community-based food initiatives.

Led by CIRAD and supported by the European Union and regional partners, PROJECT ITALIQ brings together stakeholders from Mauritius, Rodrigues, Réunion, Madagascar, Seychelles and the Comoros to explore innovative approaches to improving food security across the Indian Ocean region.

One of the key lessons from the workshop was the importance of building stronger connections between agro-ecological farmers, food processors, schools and communities at large.

A sincere thank you to all project partners and participants for the enriching exchanges and inspiring discussions. We are proud to have been part of it, strengthening our commitment toward innovative and resilient agriculture.
