Welcome to The Greater Malé Environmental Improvement and Waste Management Project, a project under the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, financed through multi-donor funding The Project includes diverse activities such as Waste Management system designs, procurement of specialist assets, construction of improved island waste management facilities, capacity-building with civic leadership, educa
tion, awareness and behavior change campaigns. The catchment area encompasses central region of Maldives zoned as Zone 3 in the national waste management system. There are 35 inhabited islands in Zone 3 with a combined population of 185,368 people accounting to 42.93% of the country’s population. Zone3 comprises islands belonging to the Greater Malé Region, Kaafu Atoll, Alifu Alifu Atoll, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, and Vaavu Atoll. The project is funded by the Asian Development Bank, Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction, Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, Japan Fund for the Joint Crediting Mechanism, Technical Assistant Special Fund, Islamic Development and the Government of Maldives. The project aims to establish a sustainable solid waste management system for the Greater Male’ capital region and its inhabited outer islands (32 islands). The main output of the project is to establish a Regional Waste Management Facility (RWMF) with Waste-to Energy Treatment Plant in Thilafushi. The Project is being implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology.
