built wall in the Maldives. Corals were mined in the as far back as 800 years ago! Coral was the main product used for construction in the Maldives until mid 1990s when coral mining was phased out and banned. This ban is probably the best thing that happened to reefs of Maldives in terms of in the recent past.

Though scientists have been studying atolls at least since the mid-1800s, many mysteries remain about exactly how they form and what factors determine their shape. Using satellite imagery collected by Landsat 7, scientists are attempting to discern if monsoons played a role in shaping the Maldives.
