So typical
Dhivessakah veethee kuni naalhama!
Of course the sentiment should be universal and not locked to a certain nationality. If you really look at the big picture though, the people that have to suffer the most in the end are Maldivians. We have to accept the reality that our fragile country could easily become uninhabitable in the near future due to our carelessness. Trash that ends up in the oceans can kill off the coral reefs that keep our low lying islands safe and bring an end to the biggest sources of income for the country - tourism and fishing. This awful reality exists regardless of our acceptance of it.
To create a change though, we need to find out the root cause behind why Maldivians think that itβs okay to litter, one foot away from a trashcan. Can we perhaps be more considerate and kinder, if not to the environment, at least to each other? Make the lives of those that clean up the area a little easier, be a little more civil and not force others to have to sit among the trash we discard and teach our children better values so that they grow up kinder as well.
