They are categorized into 8 (eight) media members and 7 (seven) general public members. Maldives Media Council was established on the 28th April 2010 after an election held among registered print and broadcast media organization in the Maldives. In the election where 20 major
media organization joined 8 members were elected from the media and seven from public. The main objectives of the Council are to :
1. Maintain freedom of the media in the Maldives, identify factors that limit that freedom and take corrective action;
2. Lay down norms and codes of conduct that people working in the media will follow;
3. Ensure that media persons and service providers adhere to the code of conduct in a responsible manner;
4. To investigate and take appropriate action against acts that contravene the principles enunciated in this law, as well as the norms and code of conduct established under this law.
