Blantyre District Council has recorded a sharp decline in child marriages with 265 cases recorded between January and July 2026 compared to 629 cases recorded during the same period last year.

The reduction is attributed to modern digital tracking and manual community follow-ups.

Blantyre District Principal Social Welfare Officer, Martha Mkisi said they are geared to ending child marriages by dissolving them wherever they are found.

Blantyre District Council has urged newly recruited constituency officers to maintain strict internal controls throughout the entire Constituency Development Fund (CDF) project cycle, rather than focusing solely on the payment stage.

Speaking during an orientation workshop for assistant accountants, assistant works supervisors, and assistant procurement officers, Council's lnternal Auditor Atupele Malimbasa Katsabola emphasised that proper technical supervision and payment certification protect the council from paying for poor or incomplete work.

She further challenged the officers to look beyond financial expenditure and focus on delivering tangible development to local communities through the CDF.

Blantyre District Commissioner Alex Mdooko has challenged officers recruited under the reformed Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to uphold professionalism, transparency, and accountability in the management of public resources.

Mdooko made the call on Tuesday during an orientation workshop for 18 Constituency officers, comprising assistant accountants, assistant procurement officers, and assistant works supervisors.

“The orientation is not a mere formality but an important opportunity for them to understand council operations, including financial management, procurement, project planning and supervision,” he said.

He advised the officers to provide technical and professional support to Constituency Development Committees (CDCs) while respecting their mandates.

" Avoid compromising your professional standards due to pressure from certain individuals," he said.

Mdooko also urged them to properly document their work and ensure that CDF projects are implemented on time, within the budget and to the required standards.

Speaking on behalf of the officers, Assistant Works Supervisor Hudson Misomali pledged to execute their duties professionally to advance community development.

A total of 17,930 participants from 15 catchment areas in Blantyre District are currently implementing land conservation measures under Phase 3 of the Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme (CSEPWP).

According to Project Facilitator Aubrey Jazza, the current phase commenced on July 15, 2026, across the catchment areas and is scheduled to conclude on August 25, 2026.

Jazza stated that the phase prioritises land restoration, the construction of new soil and water conservation structures, and the maintenance of existing catchment protection infrastructure.

The participants are expected to receive their wages after the completion of the phase.

Meanwhile, Community Development Officer for Blantyre District Council, Joseph Gama, has advised all enrolled participants to cultivate a savings habit using their earnings from the programme.

Gama emphasised that adopting a culture of saving will help households manage immediate financial demands while building long-term economic resilience against future climate shocks.
