The Giga Government Exchange Programme is underway in Geneva Switzerland from 27th to 30th January. The programme aims to discover sustainable school connectivity solutions and strengthen institutional processes for public procurement and financing.

The programme which is a partnership between UNICEF and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) focuses on connecting every school to the internet. It also brings together public sector professionals to share knowledge on financing mechanisms, procurement strategies, and governance models for inclusive digital infrastructure.

Through this engagement, Malawi aims to develop national working plans that integrate Giga's tools with context-specific delivery strategies, promoting accountability, efficiency, and equity in digital infrastructure investment for schools.

The Malawi delegation is being led by Secretary for Information and Communication Technology Harold Msusa, Deputy Director for ICT in the Ministry of Education, Chrissie Mtonga, Universal Service Fund’s Projects Manager Khumbo Kasambara and UNICEF Malawi Education Specialist Shumye Molla.

The experience will help MACRA and Malawi enhance school connectivity efforts, bridging the digital divide and improving education opportunities for students.

The Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Shadric Namalomba, has concluded his Connect A School project visits at Nkope Community Day Secondary School in Mangochi District and St. Peters Community Day Secondary School in Balaka District.

During the visits, Dr. Namalomba inspected and commended the progress being made in the construction of Smart Computer Laboratories being implemented by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) through the Universal Service Fund (USF).

In his remarks, the Minister emphasised that investment in technology remains a cornerstone for national development and citizen empowerment. He noted that for Malawi to compete globally and achieve inclusive growth, citizens must embrace technology as a productive tool for learning, innovation, entrepreneurship, and improved service delivery across education, agriculture, and other key economic sectors.

Dr. Namalomba further challenged students and surrounding communities to utilise the facilities responsibly and foster a strong sense of ownership to ensure their long-term sustainability.

The Connect A School initiative underscores Government’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and ensuring equitable access to ICT infrastructure, particularly in underserved communities, as part of Malawi’s broader digital transformation agenda.
