From the operating theatre to the research lab: meet Dr Syrold Chimatiro.

Syrold is a Consultant General Surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and a Lecturer at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences. He's now heading to the University of Leeds to pursue a PhD in colorectal cancer epidemiology and diagnostics, supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship.

In his own words: "As a surgeon, I have seen firsthand the impact of late-presenting colorectal cancer on patients and their families... this PhD is an important step in developing a career as a clinician and researcher who can translate the problems I encounter in everyday surgical practice into meaningful research and improvements in patient care."

Syrold hopes his research will lead to earlier diagnosis, better patient outcomes, and a reduced financial burden for families affected by advanced-stage cancer in Malawi.

From coordinating research studies in Malawi, to a PhD at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine : meet Chipiliro Payesa.

Chipiliro currently works as a Study Coordinator on the Johns Hopkins Research Project in Malawi. She's now heading to the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine to pursue a PhD in Epidemiology and Population Health, supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship.

In her own words: "This award is an answered prayer. Over the past several years, my work in research has shaped me as a researcher and taught me the value of rigorous research in improving health."

Chipiliro's PhD will focus on a deeply personal and important area of maternal health, defining appropriate and compassionate care for women following neonatal loss.

From representing Malawi in Brazil, to studying diplomacy in the UK: meet Chasasa Chidanti Malunga.

Chasasa previously served as Third Secretary (Administration) at Malawi's Embassy in Brasilia. She's now heading to the University of Exeter to study an MA in Diplomacy and Foreign Policy, supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship.

In her own words: "Studying in the UK, a country that plays a key role in global diplomacy and foreign policy, will give me the exposure I need... to advance Malawi's interests in several sectors of the economy such as trade, agriculture, and tourism."

Chasasa's ambitions extend beyond her own career. She hopes to inspire other young Malawians, especially young women, "to see themselves as future diplomats, leaders and representatives of Malawi on the global stage."

From lecturing on fish stock assessment, to a PhD at Bangor University: meet Kingdom Simfukwe.

Kingdom is a Malawian fisheries scientist and Lecturer in Fish Stock Assessment and Population Dynamics at Palabana University, Zambia. He's now been awarded a 2026 Commonwealth Scholarship to pursue a PhD in Fisheries Science at Bangor University in the UK.

In his own words: "I consider this award an investment in my career and the future of fisheries management in Malawi and beyond... a catalyst to acquire and strengthen my knowledge, skills, and competencies in fisheries modelling, scientific communication, and research."

Kingdom's ambitions go far beyond the PhD itself. He hopes to become a renowned scientist in fisheries management, train the next generation of fisheries scientists, and work directly with fishers and communities to support more sustainable, inclusive fisheries management.

From the wards of Dowa District Hospital πŸ‡²πŸ‡Ό to the Liverpool School of Tropical MedicineπŸ‡¬πŸ‡§: meet Dr Ella Kamanga Mlotha.

Ella is a Medical Doctor with Malawi's Ministry of Health, currently based at Dowa District Hospital. She's now heading to Liverpool to study a Master of Public Health (International), supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship.

In her own words: "This award is more than an opportunity to study abroad, it is a stepping stone towards becoming a stronger public health professional and better serving the people of Malawi."

Ella hopes to strengthen health systems and improve maternal and child health outcomes back home, calling this "an honour" she's excited to turn into lasting impact for Malawi.

Meet Daniel Sibale, bringing cutting-edge genomic science to Malawi's health research.

Daniel is currently a Pre-Master's Intern at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme.

He's now heading to Queen's University Belfast to study MSc Bioinformatics and Computational Genomics, supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship.

In his own words: "This award is an important opportunity for me to develop advanced skills in genomics and apply them to impactful research aimed at improving human health... [and] contribute more meaningfully to public health research in Malawi and beyond."
