From the operating theatre to the research lab: meet Dr Syrold Chimatiro.
Syrold is a Consultant General Surgeon at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and a Lecturer at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences. He's now heading to the University of Leeds to pursue a PhD in colorectal cancer epidemiology and diagnostics, supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship.
In his own words: "As a surgeon, I have seen firsthand the impact of late-presenting colorectal cancer on patients and their families... this PhD is an important step in developing a career as a clinician and researcher who can translate the problems I encounter in everyday surgical practice into meaningful research and improvements in patient care."
Syrold hopes his research will lead to earlier diagnosis, better patient outcomes, and a reduced financial burden for families affected by advanced-stage cancer in Malawi.
All of us at UKinMalawi send Syrold our warmest congratulations and best wishes for the years ahead. Passionate about turning clinical experience into research that saves lives? The Commonwealth Scholarship could be your next step, applications open every year. π¬π§π²πΌ
