As captured by the daily papers, we all need to join hands in the fight against mob justice in Malawi.

Let us ensure that abuse and violence against the elderly have no place in our communities. Every Malawian deserves dignity, protection, and respect.

We are all Malawians, and each one of us has the right to life and justice.

The Directorate of Peace and National Unity, in collaboration with its sister Department of Civic Education under the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development-Malawi , today called upon stakeholders in Mbelwa District Council to adopt a collaborative approach in ending the practice of accusing elderly people of witchcraft.

The engagement, led by the Acting Principal Secretary for National Unity, Ms. Cecily Kampanje, followed recent acts of mob justice in GVH German Mahowe under Traditional Authority Mbelwa in Mzimba District, which resulted in the death of two elderly persons and left one survivor seriously injured.

Narrating the incident, Mzimba Police representative Gift Zondani explained that community members, with support from some relatives, mobilized resources to invite a traditional healer to conduct a witchcraft cleansing ceremony. During the process, four elderly individuals were accused of being responsible for the alleged witchcraft practices. Police managed to rescue one victim and rushed her to safety, while two others tragically lost their lives.

Speaking during the engagement, the Director of Peace and National Unity, Emmanuel Bambe, condemned the incidents and urged stakeholders to establish community-level peace forums to ensure that every Malawian feels safe, protected, and included within society.

Bambe further indicated that the Directorate, in collaboration with the Malawi Peace and Unity Commission is working towards establishing a District Peace and Unity Committee to coordinate stakeholders in addressing conflict and preventing such occurrences.

In his presentation, the Deputy Director of Civic Education, Lawrence Hussein, assured stakeholders that the civic education hubs established in the district will intensify public awareness campaigns aimed at sensitizing communities on the dangers of mob justice and the importance of respecting the rule of law.

The Department of National Unity, in collaboration with its sister department Department of Civic Education has intensified public awareness campaigns on the dangers of mob justice following a recent surge in rumours alleging that some individuals are mysteriously stealing other people's private parts.

These false and misleading claims have triggered panic and resulted in the loss of innocent lives through acts of mob justice. We urge all citizens to verify information before sharing it and to allow law enforcement agencies to handle any suspected criminal activities.

Together, let us reject misinformation and promote peace, unity, and respect for human life.
