Roads Fund Administration (RFA), Second Update on Toll Fee Collection and Utilisation
On 24th July 2026, RFA held a press briefing at Chingeni Toll Plaza to update the media and the public on road toll fee collections and utilization for the period 1st April to 30th June 2026.
Total Toll Fee Collections for 1st April to 30th June 2026 are at MK1.77 billion an increase of 56% compared to the same period prior year. The toll fee rates adjustment was made January 2026.
Rehabilitation of M1 has commenced in earnest with MK113 billion contracts awarded for rehabilitation and periodic maintenance between Lilongwe and Blantyre for the M1 tolled road from Bunda Turn Off in Lilongwe to Kameza roundabout in Blantyre.
The M1 rehabilitation will utilize the toll fees revenue and complimented by the current receipts of the fuel levy. The RFA will also use a bank financing facility to beef up the rehabilitation of the M1 road. The facility will be serviced using fuel levy. The fuel levy is a very important revenue source for the RFA and should continue to flow into the Roads Fund.
It costs MK1.5 billion to maintain a one-kilometer road while rehabilitation cost MK2.5billion/km. Continued neglect of road maintenance overtime, results in huge maintenance costs of road infrastructure.
Currently RFA has two tollgates along the M1 road situated at Chingeni in Ntcheu and Kalinyeke in Dedza and will construct 4 more tollgates this financial year.
