Malawi Seeks Responsible Investment and Strong Partnerships in Mining
Malawi has outlined its expectations from mining investors, calling for responsible capital, technology transfer and partnerships that deliver shared and sustainable value.
Malawi’s minister of mining, Hon. Thoko Tembo, MP, made the call when he delivered a keynote address at the Africa Down Under (ADU) Conference in Perth, Australia.
The mining minister said Malawi is looking for investors willing to provide capital, financing and technology to advance mining projects efficiently from exploration through to production.
He emphasized the importance of strong environmental, social and governance commitments, including Community Development Agreements, approved Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, and transparent resettlement processes that protect affected communities.
Hon. Tembo also highlighted the need for increased local value addition through in-country processing and beneficiation, in line with Malawi’s policy of moving up the mineral value chain.
He further called for fair and transparent partnerships through well-negotiated Mining Development Agreements and transparency in revenue and contract management in line with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) principles.
The Minister also identified the integration of Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM) into the formal mining economy as an important area for collaboration.
Hon. Tembo is leading a Malawian delegation comprising representatives from the Ministry of Mining, Mining and Minerals Regulatory Authority (MMRA), Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), mining companies and financial services institutions, including NBM, Ecobank, FDH Bank, Old Mutual and NBS Bank.
ADU is a leading platform for Australian-African business and government engagement in the mining and energy sectors and has grown into the largest African-focused mining event held outside Africa.
