TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPES AND LIVELIHOODS PROJECT (TLLP) SUPPORTS PEOPLE IN NTCHEU TO PROTECT FORESTS AND IMPROVE LIVELIHOODS

The Transforming Landscapes and Livelihoods Project at the Department of Forestry has handed over a solar-powered irrigation machine to Chogawana Group and a groundnut butter processing machine to Namilamba Group in Ntcheu District.

This support is part of government efforts to ensure that trees and forests are protected, and that communities have sustainable livelihood options so they are not forced to depend on cutting down trees.

Chogawana group was established in 2022 with 184 members, 22 men and 162 women. The group was formed after members witnessed the impacts of climate change in their area. Their goal is to help members meet their household needs.
The group is located in Chogawana Village, GVH Chogawana, TA Makwangwala, Ntcheu.

Namilamba Group started in 2017 with 63 members. In 2019, 16 members remained and began groundnut farming. Currently, the group has 34 members, 9 men and 26 women.
The group is located in Kazembe Village, GVH Pamdule, TA Njolomole, Ntcheu.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Senior Deputy Director of the Department of Forestry, Mr. Kamoto, commended both groups for their dedication to the commendable work they are doing. He said:
"We have realized that people take better care of trees and forests when they have food, clothing, and a decent standard of living. That is why we are providing this equipment so that as we take care of the environment, we are also transforming people’s lives."

This initiative shows that forest conservation and improving livelihoods go hand in hand. By supporting income-generating activities, we are giving communities alternatives to charcoal production and cutting trees for firewood. Let's support our country.

HEARSE DRIVER FINED K2.5 MILLION FOR CHARCOAL TRAFFICKING IN CHIKWAWA.

The Chikwawa Senior Resident Magistrate court on 5 August, 2026 convicted and fined Lenard Kalonga 59, to pay fine of K2,500,000 for trafficking and found in possession of charcoal without permit.

The Court heard from the state prosecutor Assistant Superintendent Enerst Mangwena that Kalonga in the evening of 14th February, 2026 was detained at Thabwa roadblock whilst carrying 40 bags of charcoal in a hearse which he was driving registration number CZ 7291 from Chikwawa to Blantyre.

Mangwena further narrated to the court that Kalonga was arrested after forest officials received a tip that the hearse carried charcoal. When it was searched, it was established that it carried 40 bags of charcoal.

When appearing in court Kalonga pleaded guilty to the count of trafficking charcoal without permit which is contrary to section 68 (3)(b) of Forestry amendment Act number 31 of 2025 but pleaded not guilty to the count of found in possession of charcoal without permit contrary to section 68(3)(a) which prompted the state to parade five witnesses who testified the case against him.

In his submission, Assistant Superintendent Enerst Mangwena asked the the court to give him a stiff penalty citing that the offences are serious in nature.

In his mitigations, Kalonga asked the court not to give him custodial sentence because of his condition.

When passing his sentence Senior Resident Ragistrate Magistrate Gift Msume considered the plea from the state that the offences are serious in nature, he therefore sentenced Kalonga to three years imprisonment with hard labour for the first count.

On the second count, he sentenced him to 2 years but he later suspended the custodial sentences and ordered him to pay K1,000,000 and K1,500,000 fines respectively. and again sentenced him to 2 years imprisonment with hard labour which has been suspended on condition that he pays a fine of K1,000,000.

The bags of charcoal have been forfeited to the Malawi Government.

Meanwhile Kalonga has paid the fine of K2,500.000.

Lenard Kalonga comes from Chibwana Village Traditional Authority Mpama in Chiradzulu District.

PARTNERSHIP FOR RESTORATION

Today, senior officials from World Vision Malawi and World Vision Australia visited the Department of Forestry for discussions on Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR). This is a low cost forest and land restoration technique where farmers protect, manage and regenerate existing tree stumps, roots and seeds that are already in their fields, instead of planting new trees.

World Vision shared their ambitious goal of restoring 1.8 million hectares through FMNR practice in Malawi and emphasized the need to sign an MOU with the Department of Forestry to strengthen this work.

In her remarks, Senior Deputy Director Madam Masupayi thanked World Vision for showing commitment to partner with the Department of Forestry in restoring our degraded landscapes.

FROM COMMUNITY GROUP TO COOPERATIVE: THE ZOKOMA STORY

Everyone has a story to tell, but Zokoma’s is one of collaboration, resilience and continuous progress.

Located in Kaliza Village, under GVH Mkutumula in Ntcheu District, Zokoma began its journey in 2007 as a community group with the goal of improving members’ livelihoods.
The members pooled resources to purchase bare land, which is now fully stocked with trees by managing natural regenerants. They started with just 10 beehives, today they manage 106 beehives, of which 86 are colonised.

With technical and financial support from the Transforming Landscapes and Livelihood Project (TLLP) of the Drylands Sustainable Landscapes Impact Programme (DSL-IP), the group grew its honey production from less that 300kgs of honey to at least 700Kgs per harvest. Their ambition has been further boosted by a MK150 million grant from AGCOM to scale operations.

Following capacity building by the Ministry of Trade and completion of all registration requirements, the group has now been formally registered as a cooperative. The project will further support the cooperative with product certification for more secure market access.

Speaking during the Cooperative Certificate handover ceremony, the Director of Forestry, Mr. Custom Nyirenda, commended the cooperative for its dedication and zeal. He urged members to continue collaborating across sectors to ensure sustainability.

*12-TONNE TRUCK AND 157 BAGS OF CHARCOAL FORFEITED TO GOVERNMENT*

On 7 July 2026, the Financial Crimes Division of the High Court in Lilongwe has forfeited a 12-tonne Mercedes Benz truck registration number BL 6499 and 157 bags of illegal charcoal to the Government of Malawi.

The vehicle was seized on 8th March, 2025 in Mchinji for contravening Section 68(3)(a) of the Forestry Act.

This ruling reinforces our commitment to fighting illegal charcoal production and trafficking.
