The Director of Quality Assurance in the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Laurent Kansinjiro, today presided over the closing ceremony of the Children’s Parliament in Balaka District, supported by Save the Children in collaboration with other partners under the theme, “Strengthening Child Rights Protection Through Delivery of Quality Social Services.”

The Children’s Parliament provided a platform for children to discuss issues affecting their rights, welfare and development, while engaging duty bearers and other stakeholders on matters of concern to children in their communities.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, Kansinjiro commended Save the Children and its partners for supporting initiatives that promote children’s participation and strengthen child protection systems.

He emphasised the importance of ensuring that children’s voices are heard and their concerns reflected in programmes and policies that affect their lives.

He further encouraged children to speak out against all forms of violence, abuse, exploitation and harmful practices, while urging communities, parents, caregivers and service providers to work together to create safe and supportive environments for every child.

Speaker of the two day Parliament session, Clever George, said sexual violence, child labour, forced marriages, and limited access to quality health and education services are among the challenges requiring urgent attention.

The Children’s Parliament also provided an opportunity for children to make recommendations on improving access to quality social services and strengthening mechanisms for protecting their rights at community and district levels.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working with partners and other stakeholders to strengthen child rights protection and ensure that children in Malawi are able to grow, learn and develop in safe and supportive environments.

Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Mary Thom Navicha, has congratulated the Malawi Women’s National Football Team, the Scorchers, for making history by qualifying for the finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) currently underway in Morocco.

Navicha said the achievement has brought immense pride to Malawians and demonstrated the talent, determination and resilience of Malawian women.

She said the team’s historic performance, as debutants, has shown that Malawian women can compete at the highest level.

The Minister has also expressed appreciation to institutions, organisations and individuals that have supported the Mighty Scorchers throughout their journey, including National Bank of Malawi, Women Parliamentarians, the Speaker of Parliament, Mayor of Blantyre City Isaac Jomo Osman, social media influencers, and thousands of passionate Malawian supporters who have continued to encourage the team.

She said the achievement has united Malawians across political, social and geographical lines, describing the support for the team as a demonstration of Malawi at its best.

“To our the Scorchers, you have made history and made Malawi proud. You have shown the world the power, talent and resilience of Malawian women. Malawi is proud of you,” said Navicha.

Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Hon. Mary Navicha, has launched the Parenting with Purpose Toolkit to equip faith leaders with practical skills to promote positive parenting and strengthen child protection across Malawi.

The toolkit, developed by the Malawi Interfaith Association for Action (MIAA) with support from UNICEF and partners, is designed to help faith leaders address pressing issues affecting children and families, including child labour, child marriage, teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence, child abandonment, mental health, and other child protection concerns.

Speaking during the launch, the Minister said faith leaders are trusted voices in communities and have a critical role to play in promoting responsible parenting, protecting children, and strengthening family values.

She urged all faith institutions to embrace the toolkit and use it to influence positive behaviour change and support children's health and wellbeing.

In her remarks Country Director for UNICEF Penny Campbell called on faith institutions across Malawi to embrace the toolkit and use it to champion positive parenting and child protection.

She said by working together, faith leaders, communities, and partners can create safer and more supportive environments where every child can thrive.

The Deputy Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Martha Mzomera Ngwira, is today participating in the Sixth Ordinary Session of the African Union Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Social Development, Labour and Employment in Windhoek, Namibia.

The meeting has brought together Ministers and senior government officials responsible for social development, labour and employment from across Africa to discuss policies and strategies aimed at accelerating inclusive and sustainable development.

The 2026 session is being held under the theme; "Investing, Strengthening and Expanding Social Protection Systems in Africa: Critical Enablers for Inclusion, Resilience and Social Justice."

The theme underscores the importance of robust and well-financed social protection systems in reducing poverty and inequality, building resilience to economic and climate-related shocks, promoting decent work, and advancing inclusive growth.

During the session, Member States are expected to share experiences and best practices, review progress in implementing previous African Union decisions, and adopt common policy positions to strengthen social protection systems, labour markets, and social development across the continent.

Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Thom Navicha has expressed excitement after meeting a young girl who aspires to become Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare in future.

Given Mkupu, visited Parliament on Wednesday in the company of her friend, Tiyamike Tsegula, who also dreams of becoming Minister of Agriculture.

At Parliament, Mkupu met Navicha while Tsegula interacted with Minister of Agriculture Roza Mbilizi. The two ministers took time to explain the functions of their ministries and the responsibilities that come with serving in public office.

Speaking after the meeting, Navicha described the encounter as humbling, saying it reflected the impact of efforts to inspire young girls to pursue leadership positions.

"This girl is geared to be my successor and she has assured me that she means it," said Navicha.

She said one of the assignments entrusted to her by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika is to inspire hope and promote positive mindset change among girls.

Navicha said meeting Mkupu at Parliament was evidence that such efforts are bearing fruit, adding that empowering girls to dream big is critical to developing future women leaders.

The minister encouraged girls across the country to remain focused on their education and believe in their potential to serve the nation in various leadership positions.

Deputy Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Martha Mzomera Ngwira, has expressed deep concern over the rising incidents of mob justice in Mzimba District, where elderly people have been subjected to violence, abuse, serious injuries, and even death.

Mzomera Ngwira made the remarks on Sunday when she accompanied the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri , to a stakeholders interface meeting on violence and abuse against older persons.

She said national statistics paint an alarming picture, with more than 300 elderly Malawians killed over witchcraft accusations since 2015.

The Deputy Minister noted that the trend remains worrying, revealing that in the first four months of 2026 alone, 11 elderly people had already been killed. If the pattern continues, the figure is likely to exceed the 22 deaths recorded throughout 2025.

"These numbers reveal that this problem is not isolated but structural, and it continues to escalate," she said.

Mzomera Ngwira called for concerted efforts from communities, traditional leaders, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders to end violence against older persons and protect their rights and dignity.

The Secretary for Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, Dr. Esmie Tamanda Kainja, today officially inaugurated the refurbished Mutu Community-Based Child Care Centre (CBCC) at Mbwetu Primary School in Lilongwe District.

The refurbishment was funded by First Capital Bank in partnership with ActionAid Malawi to provide a safe, inclusive and child-friendly learning environment for young children.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Kainja said investing in Early Childhood Development is essential to giving every child the best start in life and lays a strong foundation for future learning and development.

She commended First Capital Bank and ActionAid Malawi for complementing Government's efforts to improve ECD services.

ActionAid Malawi Country Director, Yandula Chipeta, reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to supporting initiatives that improve the wellbeing and development of children through partnerships with Government and local communities.

Kainja also called on the community to take ownership of the facility by protecting the infrastructure and ensuring that it is well maintained for the benefit of future generations.
