MAREP Phase 9 Brings Power to M’bande in Chikwawa

The Minister of Energy and Mining, Dr. Jean Mathanga, today graced the electricity switch-on ceremony for the M’bande MAREP site in Chikwawa, under the Malawi Rural Electrification Programme (MAREP) Phase 9.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Mathanga said it is the Government of Malawi’s commitment to ensure that people in rural areas have access to electricity.

“We are in Phase 9 where over 500 sites across the country will be reached, with Chikwawa alone benefiting from 22 sites.

"This government recognises the importance of such projects as they transform people’s lives,” said Mathanga.

Member of Parliament for Chikwawa Central Constituency, Jerald Bede, commended government for fulfilling its promise of bringing electricity to the area. He assured government that the people of Chikwawa Central will safeguard the infrastructure and ensure it is not vandalised.

Senior Traditional Authority Ndakwera also urged people in the area to remain vigilant and work together in protecting the development from theft and vandalism. He further called on chiefs to take an active role in safeguarding the project infrastructure.

Speaking earlier, the Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Energy and Mining, Elvis Thodi, said the M’bande Electrification Project in Chikwawa has cost K582 million more due to vandalism, which has occurred more than once.

MAREP is a Government Program in the Ministry of Energy and Mining with the aim of increasing access to electricity in rural and peri -urban areas.

The programme is implemented in phases and is currently in Phase 9.

LIGHTING UP RURAL MALAWI: HON.DR JEAN MATHANGA SWITCHES ON MANDRADE TRADING CENTER.

The Minister of Energy and Mining, Hon. Dr Jean Mathanga, M.P, today switched on electricity at Mandrade Trading Center in Chikwawa District. This marks a great step in Governmnet’s efforts to increase electricity access to rural communities across Malawi

Mandrade Trading center has been electrified under Malawi Rural Electrification Program (MAREP), phase 9 which will electrify more than 500 rural areas across the country except Likoma District, which is fully electrified. Under MAREP Phase 9, the Ministry has already electrified 22 areas in Chikwawa District alone.

Speaking during the switch on ceremony, Dr Mathanga urged community members and traditional leaders to ensure that the installed powerline is not vandalised. During construction phase, Mandrade site was vandalized more than once making the Ministry to use extra 582 Million Kwacha to reconstruct the powerline.

“Preparations for MAREP Phase 10 are already underway, with implementation expected to begin next year as Government pushes to connect even more Malawians to electricity” Dr. Mathanga stated.

While acknowledging low electricity generation capacity, Dr Mathanga highlighted that, beyond grid expansion, Government is also investing in large-scale power generation projects to improve electricity reliability across the country, including: development of a solar power plant in Salima by Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) is developing a solar power plant in Salima, the Ministry is developing Mpatamanga Hydro project and Malawi is already importing from Zambia and will soon connect to Mozambique.
