Habitat for Humanity Malawi and Mzuzu City Council held a three-day technical validation workshop in Nkhata Bay District to review and refine the proposed Mzuzu City Building By-laws. The workshop followed a broader stakeholder review session held in Mzuzu on 15 May 2026, during which input was gathered from various interested parties.

The meeting aimed to integrate stakeholder feedback into a zero draft of the revised by-laws. Participants included Mzuzu City Council’s technical team, led by Director of Planning and Development Mr. Macmillan Magomero, as well as physical planning officers, estates managers, legal officers, public relations staff, and building inspectors.

Over the three days, the team worked through the document and produced a refined draft that addresses key concerns, recommendations, and additions raised during the earlier consultations. The updated version is expected to be more practical, inclusive, and better aligned with current urban development realities in Mzuzu.

The workshop was held under the Building and Repairing Homes for Sustainable Urban Communities and Home Equals projects, both of which Habitat for Humanity Malawi is implementing in Mzuzu City.

The technical team expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the workshop and commended HFH Malawi for its technical support and facilitation. The completion of the zero draft represents a significant step toward finalizing the revised Mzuzu City Building By-laws, which aim to strengthen the city’s regulatory framework for safe, resilient, and orderly urban growth.

Habitat for Humanity Malawi’s Senior Management Team, led by National Director Rex Chapota, paid a courtesy call on Mulanje District Council, where the organisation is implementing several interventions.

During the meeting with council officials, including District Commissioner Chris Nawata, Habitat presented its 2025–2030 strategic plan and explained how it aligns with Malawi 2063 (MW2063), particularly the urbanisation pillar focused on developing world-class urban centres, metropolitan areas, and tourism hubs with quality socio-economic amenities.

Nawata described the meeting as fruitful, noting that Habitat shared a strategic plan centered on collaboration, partnerships, and community participation.

In its new strategic plan, one of Habitat for Humanity’s key pillars is to build more and better homes. Through it, the organisation aims to scale up construction, repairs, and home improvements to benefit 12,000 people, while disaster resilience and recovery efforts are expected to reach 200,000.

The organisation also plans to build 18 additional disaster-resilient houses for 18 households affected by Cyclone Freddy in 2023 in Mulanje, the site where Habitat for Humanity developed its model village.

As part of its Cyclone Freddy response, Habitat for Humanity implemented the Nanchidwa Housing Recovery Project in Mulanje District. With support from donors, the organisation has so far provided permanent, disaster-resilient homes to 67 of the 96 affected households at Nanchidwa Camp.

Last week, Habitat for Humanity Malawi bid farewell to Nicholas Owuor following the successful conclusion of his three-month tenure as Interim National Director. Owuor, who also serves as Basic Services Manager for Habitat for Humanity’s Africa Area Office, assumed the interim leadership role at a critical juncture for the organisation in Malawi.

His departure comes as the institution has successfully recruited a new National Director, marking a smooth leadership transition.

During his tenure, Owuor worked diligently to reinforce the organisation’s mission of providing decent, affordable housing and advancing shelter rights across the country. His leadership was marked by a balanced approach that combined pragmatic responses to immediate challenges with a clear strategic vision for sustainable growth and long-term impact.

Owuor focused on several key priorities. He collaborated closely with the local team to review and realign existing project portfolios, ensuring stronger coherence with national development needs and Habitat for Humanity’s global strategic objectives. He also strengthened donor relations through proactive engagement with partners and stakeholders, helping to secure essential funding and support for both ongoing and future initiatives.

On 15 May 2026, Habitat for Humanity Malawi, in in partnership with Mzuzu City Council (MCC), held a stakeholder workshop at St. John of God in Mzuzu to review and validate the draft Mzuzu City Building By-laws. Participants included government officials, technical experts, councillors, and community structures.

The workshop followed a technical review held on 21 and 24 April 2026, when a team of technocrats prepared the first draft of the revised by-laws. It marked an important stage in the process by inviting wider stakeholder input before the document is finalized.

HFH Malawi’s support reflects its long-standing commitment to safe, adequate, and affordable housing, particularly for low-income and vulnerable households in informal settlements. Strong building by-laws are essential for improving housing quality and safety, guiding responsible land use, and supporting sustainable urban development. Through this work, HFH Malawi is helping to strengthen a regulatory environment that promotes inclusive and resilient cities.

This initiative is part of the Campaign and the Building and Repairing Homes for Sustainable Urban Communities projects, which Habitat for Humanity Malawi is implementing in the Geisha and Nkhorongo informal settlements in Mzuzu.

DoDMA representatives, including Charles Matabwa, Director for Preparedness and Response, reaffirmed their commitment to working with Habitat for Humanity Malawi.

The partnership is important for improving disaster preparedness and response in Malawi. As part of its response to Tropical Cyclone Freddy in 2023, Habitat implemented the Nanchidwa Housing Recovery Project in Mulanje District. The project created a model village for affected families. Volunteer Gabby, on her first Habitat build and first visit to Malawi, shared: “I came not knowing what to expect, but what I have found is a community that welcomes you with open arms and a humility that changes how you see the world and yourself.”

Homeowner Chrissy, one of the beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude: “This will help us stand on our own feet again. Your hands have built more than walls. You have built our tomorrow.”

Since the resumption of the global village volunteer program in 2024, Habitat for Humanity Malawi has hosted 18 international teams totaling 251 volunteers from countries including the USA, Netherlands, France, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and the UK. Together, they have supported the construction of 37 homes in Lilongwe and Mulanje.

In Mulanje’s Nanchidwa village, the volunteers helped provide decent shelter for 12 families. This forms part of a larger recovery project that has already supported 67 out of 96 targeted households, focusing on rebuilding homes, dignity, and resilience after the cyclone.

What a beautiful day! It is the second day of the build for the United States' Silicon Valley Global Village team. The 13-member group is in Nanchidwa, Mulanje, constructing two houses for two families alongside local masons and community members.

The team includes two board members and three Habitat staff from U.S. affiliates. Notably, two volunteers are returning to Malawi- they previously built with a Global Village team in Salima in 2019.

Despite being only the second day, both houses have already reached window level, a testament to the group’s dedication and hard work. The strong collaboration between the volunteers and the local community has created a wonderful spirit of camaraderie and shared purpose.

Community members warmly welcomed the team and expressed deep gratitude for the homes that will bring shelter and stability to the families.

Under the bright sun, the volunteers work with enthusiasm and determination. Each brick laid brings hope for a better future.

Beyond constructing houses, this experience is about building relationships and fostering cultural understanding.

With each passing day, the team looks forward to completing the homes and witnessing the lasting impact their efforts will have on these families.
