Pictorial Focus on the Closing Ceremony of the Parliamentary Training Programme (Second Cohort)
The Second Deputy Speaker Honourable Esther Jolobala, MP on Friday presided over the closing ceremony of the three-week Parliamentary Training Programme for the Second Cohort held at Malawi School of Government (Kanengo Campus).
In her remarks, Honourable Jolobala urged the cohort to put the knowledge they have gained to ensure every debate, budget scrutiny and oversight engagement is utilized to make a difference not just be heard.

𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞-𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭

Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Sameer Suleman, has called for a Parliament that is independent, accessible, responsive and accountable to the people.

Speaking on Wednesday at the official opening ceremony of National Indaba on Parliament’s Representative Role in Malawi at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe, Right Honourable Suleman said Parliament must translate citizens’ concerns into effective legislation, oversight and representation.

He said the Phungu Wanga (My MP) Project, implemented in Rumphi, Mchinji and Balaka, had strengthened engagement between MPs and constituents by creating platforms for citizens to understand Parliament and voice their concerns.

"Let me urge Parliamentary Committees to strengthen oversight of government programmes and public resources to ensure they benefit Malawians", Speaker Suleman said.

As the project concludes, Suleman urged stakeholders to view the Indaba as a foundation for sustained citizen engagement rather than an end to the initiative.

“Our goal remains clear: to build a Parliament that listens to its people, represents their interests, makes quality laws and holds power to account,” he said.

The Phungu Wanga Project is being implemented by the Centre for Civil Society Strengthening (CCSS) in collaboration with Save the Children Malawi, with funding from the European Union in Malawi.

EU Ambassador to Malawi, Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi, commended the project for strengthening the connection between MPs and their constituents, particularly through outreach programmes.

He said the EU was considering the possibility of supporting a “Phungu Wanga 2.0”, although discussions on the next cooperation cycle were still ongoing.
