BACKYARD GARDENING IMPROVES MALNUTRITIONAL CASES IN T.A CHITEKWERE'S COMMUNITY

Backyard gardening was taught to Sagawa village as one of the many influential ways of promoting nutritional status in rural areas. In many cases when families had their produce upon harvest the first thing that came to their mind was selling the produce with the aim of getting money. However, backyard gardens where established for household’s personal benefit before taking the food to the market. Mrs Galagaza one of the beneficiaries of the backyard gardening expresses the impact that the garden has brought in her life and that of her family “before backyard gardening my husband always pressurized us to sell our yearly produce from the farm and only benefit from the remains or damaged few which in many cases we had none. Indeed money was there but our health and that of my 4 year old was deteriorating. The introduction of the gardens has created a whole new beginning in our lives we nutritiously feed in all the 6 food groups year long without destroying our business at our main farm”. As NAO our role is to ensure that the resources
committed to Malawi by the EU are properly
programmed, implemented and properly
accounted for in line with the international best
practices and within the agreed cooperation
framework signed between the EU and
GoM. The NAO acts as a link between the European Union and the Malawi Government.
Currently the Programmes that are currently underway are Governance Programme; Education and TEVET programme and Agriculture and Nutrition Programme.

In Chitipa district Afikepo Programme is covering 5TAs and 20 primary schools therefore reaching a total number of 20,496 households. 204 care groups have been formed in the district were women of childbearing age, adolescent girls, and care givers of infant and young children are being empowered so that they decide on what is needed to enhance their nutritional status and that of their children and to support them in addressing their needs

Students at Ishalikira Primary School have benefited from the Programme and are eating nutritious meals everyday at school.
Lusako Care group is among the 204 care groups that have benefited from the Programme

AFIKEPO Programme is being implemented in 10 Districts across Malawi.
Northern Region: Chitipa; Karonga; Mzimba; Nkhatabay
Central Region: Nkhotakota; Salima; Kasungu
Southern Region: Chiradzulu; Thyolo; Mulanje

1. In 180 days, more than 105,000 primary school children and pre-school children of 150 schools and 50 pre-schools are eating porridge of a nutritious mix of ingredients
2. a great number of learners who dropped out of school in 20 primary schools have flocked back to their respective schools because of the feeding project.
3. 239 care groups have been created under the Afikepo Programme.
4. 2542 primary schools have been reached by the Afikepo Programme giving a total percentage of 44%ministry schools in Malawi.
5. Parents have been trained and are now able to prepare healthy food that is locally available without compromising their family’s health.
