Ambassador Daniel Aristi-Gaztelumendi visited the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) for an exchange on the state of human rights in Malawi and tge support that the EU provides to the Commission.

In a productive meeting with Commissioner Theresa Ndanga-Chirwa, Executive Secretary Habiba Osman, and MHRC officials, discussions highlighted key priorities—from protecting the rights of prisoners, refugees, and migrants, to strengthening the fight against corruption and promoting transparency through the Access to Information Act. The conversation also undescored Malawi's progress on UPR recommendations and the ongoing push towards abolishing the death penalty.

While challenges remain, there is real momentum in the human rights domain. The continued partnership between the EU and MHRC—through the Chilungamo II (Access to Justice) Programme—is making a tangible difference, helping to advance human rights and expand access to justice for all Malawians.

Together, these efforts are paving the way for a more just, transparent, and inclusive society.

Village loans benefit everyone involved. Eli found out first hand just how these loans benefit communities when he visited the Tikondane Group in Mulanje.

Their loan scheme addresses not just the meeting of immediate needs, but also enables the starting of small businesses that have changed the lives of those involved.

This week, we welcome members of the new EU Youth Sounding Board (YSB) 2026-2028 in Malawi at the EU Delegation, for their on-boarding workshop. These are eight bright young Malawians selected out of 1,700 applicants – congratulations to them!

They, as Youth Sounding Board, will be involved in monitoring EU programmes in the field, engaging with youth organizations, giving direct advice on EU policy design, undertaking thematic trainings, and overall helping the EU in Malawi shape interventions that matter most to Malawian young people. Tomorrow is being defined today; thus, the voice of the youth, their insight and energy are essential.

Today in Lilongwe, EU Ambassador Daniel Aristi Gaztelumendi met community radio partners from across Malawi under the Growing Malawi Together campaign.

He emphasised that community radio is vital in Malawi, the most trusted and accessible medium, and a key EU partner in amplifying community voices.

The EU–Malawi partnership is delivering real, visible results for people across the country, in line with shared interests, and community radio is central to bringing these results closer to citizens.

From energy and infrastructure to jobs and opportunities for young people, this is about real impact in everyday lives.

And it’s not just about speaking, it’s about listening, engaging, and ensuring this partnership reflects the priorities of Malawians.

Human traffickers and migrant smugglers have been operating in Malawi in recent years, typically bringing their victims from the Horn region towards South Africa.

In response to this challenge, Malawi has joined two existing regional projects, funded by the European Union, namely the Better Migration Management (BMM) and the Regional Operational Centre in support of the Khartoum Process (ROCK) programs.

Speaking at the workshop kick-starting both projects in Malawi, the Minister of Homeland Security, Honourable Peter Mukhito, the UN Resident Coordinator, Rebecca Adda-Dontoh, and the EU Ambassador to Malawi, Daniel Aristi-Gaztelumendi, welcomed the initiative and expanded on the impact of human trafficking and migrant smuggling on individuals, families, and communities and the need for strong regional cooperation and long-term solutions.

The BMM and ROCK platforms offer a decade worth of know-how and capacities, ranging from concrete operational guidelines and interview templates for agents of the law all the way to access to a regional network of government agencies involved in tackling human trafficking.

The combination of BMM and ROCK allows for the combatting of the crime itself together with the protection and assistance to victims of trafficking.

The projects, which have a regional budget of EUR28M from the European Union and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), will be implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and CIVIPOL (the technical cooperation operator of the French Ministry of the Interior) in Malawi for 36 months up to 2028.
