Malawi Defence Force Begins SOP Amendment Exercise

The success of every mission depends on clear procedures, disciplined ex*****on, and continuous improvement.

In line with this commitment, the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) through the Department of Policy and Plans is running a 2 day Exercise on the Amendment of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) at Linde Motel in Mponela, Dowa to strengthen understanding, ensure alignment with current policies, and enhance operational efficiency across all units.

Chaired by the Chief of Policy and Plans at the Malawi Defence Force Headquarters, Brig Gen D Kuwali, the exercise is highlighting the importance of regularly reviewing and updating SOPs to address evolving requirements, improve coordination, and reinforce accountability at every level of command. Participants are given the opportunity to revisit key procedural changes, discuss their practical application, and clarify responsibilities in implementation.

Through this exercise, Malawi Defence Force personnel are reminded that SOP amendments are not merely administrative updates, but essential measures that support readiness, professionalism, and mission accomplishment.

By keeping procedures relevant and well understood, the MDF ensures that every member remains prepared to respond effectively, lawfully, and with discipline.This execrise is also emphasizing the value of unity, communication, and shared commitment in carrying out institutional improvements. With informed personnel and standardized guidance, the command continues to uphold excellence in service and organizational effectiveness. The exercise will run from 11th to 12th June, 2026.

34TH SADC DEFENCE SUB COMMITTEE MEETING OPENS IN LILONGWE

The 34th Ordinary Meeting of the Defence Sub-Committee of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) officially began today at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, Malawi.

This meeting follows the successful three-day sessions of the Joint Operations Sub-Sub Committee and the Defence Intelligence Standing Committee, which laid the groundwork for this important session. Defence chiefs and delegates from across the region have gathered to strengthen cooperation in defence and security related matters.

In his opening remarks, General George Alexander Jaffu Jnr, Chief of Defence Force of Malawi and Chairperson of the Committee, emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity in maintaining peace and stability across Southern Africa. He urged delegates to focus on practical outcomes that protect and respect the dignity of citizens. He also noted that the meeting comes just after Africa Day, a reminder of the shared sacrifices and values that continue to unite the region.

Professor Kula Theletsane, Director of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security, warned against short-term, transactional approaches to international relations. He stressed that SADC member states should focus on human security by investing in health, education, climate resilience, and strong institutions, alongside traditional defence cooperation.

Malawi assumed the chairmanship of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation on August 17, 2025.

15 OFFICER CADETS COMMISSIONED AS LIEUTENANTS

Minister of Defence, Honourable Dr Feston Kaupa, MP, today presided over the commissioning of 15 mature-entry officer cadets at the Malawi Armed Forces College (MAFCO) in Salima.

Of the 15 newly commissioned officers, 12 are male, and 3 are female, all of whom have undergone a 9-month extensive program in combat, leadership, and strategy which commenced on 1st September 2025.

Speaking during the event, the Minister commended MAFCO for maintaining high standards of training and discipline. He urged the new officers to uphold professionalism, loyalty, and integrity as they take up their new roles.

“Go forth and serve our country with pride and dignity. May your service inspire confidence, protect our stability, and strengthen the unity of all Malawians,” said Kaupa.

On his part, General George Alexander Jaffu Jnr, Chief of Defence Force (CDF), Malawi Defence Force, congratulated the officers on the successful completion of the highly challenging course and reminded them that their commissioning marks the beginning of a demanding career of service and sacrifice.

“Never forget where you started from. The best officers remember the barracks, the trenches, and the guard duty. Stay close to your soldiers and listen to your Non-Commissioned Officers who form the backbone of our defence force,” said the Chief of Defence Force.

He further challenged the lieutenants to be innovative and adaptable in responding to modern security threats, including peacekeeping, disaster response, and cyber-related challenges.

The newly commissioned lieutenants now form part of a long legacy of finest leaders in the military and are expected to enhance MDF’s operational readiness and strengthen the force’s contribution to national defence, disaster relief, and international peace support missions.
