First Lady Madam Gertrude Mutharika, through the Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust, on Friday launched the ‘My Clean School, My Pride’ campaign, targeting both public and private schools in the country.
Speaking during the launch at Phalombe Primary School ground, Mutharika said the initiative aims to promote healthy living conditions and prevent waterborne diseases, enabling citizens to actively participate in national development.
"We want all our children to remain healthy at school and at home. It should be everyone's responsibility to take care of our homes, as well as public and private spaces, ensuring that waste is disposed of in the right places," Mutharika said.
She said that the campaign will roll out at the constituency level before expanding to the district level, emphasizing that cleanliness should become a permanent culture rather than a temporary effort for the sake of a competition.
Paramount Chief Kaduya commended the initiative, adding that the campaign has been launched at an opportune time when the country-including Phalombe district-is fighting against Cholera.
She urged her fellow traditional leaders to take an active role in ensuring that their surroundings remain clean.
As part of the initiative, participating schools will receive sanitation materials and a total of 6,952 schools are expected to participate in the competition.
