NRB STRENGTHENS ITS EFFORTS TO FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION
In its efforts to curb corruption, the National Registration Bureau (NRB) together with the Anti-Corruption Bureau held a three-day risk register review meeting at Linde hotel in Dowa district starting from 24th to 26th August, 2026.
The NRB institutional integrity committee main called for this meeting to evaluate the possible causes of corruption within the operations of NRB, the existing internal controls and their effectiveness in fighting against corruption.
Speaking during the meeting, the Senior Corruption Prevention Officer for ACB Mr. Jimmy Mtafya, commended NRB for its efforts in fighting against corruption. He said that NRB’s dedication to end corruption is crucial to the development of Malawi as its services affect people’s ability to access public services and help in providing social protection.
“The services offered by NRB have a great impact on people’s identity, access to public services, providing social protection as well as ensuring social inclusivity of all people. As such, there is a need to ensure that the institution is corruption free; Mtafya said.”
The Deputy Director of ethics in the Department of Homeland security in her remarks emphasised the importance of the meeting, stating that the review of the risk register is not just a routine exercise, but critical for the bureau’s fight against corruption.
In his words, the Principal Secretary for NRB Mr. Patrick Machika stated that the Management will act on all reported cases of staff misconduct and enforce disciplinary measures where warranted. He also commended NRB staff for their hard work and dedication to duty particularly in the ongoing birth registration exercise.
The meeting was attended by selected staff members from the headquarters and districts. Lack of integrity, personal interest, and poor service delivery are some of the causes of corruption that were highlighted during the meeting.
With the assistance of ACB officials, the Bureau devised a corruption risk register and treatment plan that will guide its fight against corrupt practices.

Malawi is making global headlines in digital innovation!

A blockchain-enabled Digital ID Wallet developed by UNDP Malawi, in partnership with the National Registration Bureau - Malawi (NRB) and the United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC), has been featured in the 101 Real-World Blockchain Use Cases Handbook 2026 published by the Global Blockchain Business Council (GBBC).

Built on Malawi’s successful national ID system, which has registered 13.5 million people, the Digital ID Wallet will allow citizens to securely access and share trusted digital credentials through their mobile devices.

The platform is designed to support digital identity, birth certificates, driving licences, marriage certificates, and other credentials, making access to public and private services faster, safer, and more efficient.

This international recognition highlights Malawi’s growing role as a leader in digital transformation and demonstrates how innovative technologies can improve governance, strengthen service delivery, reduce fraud, and expand access to essential services for all.

Congratulations to UNDP Malawi, National Registration Bureau - Malawi, UNICC, and all partners driving Malawi’s digital future forward.
