The Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, today, 21st August, had an interface meeting with the NGO Gender Coordination network led by the chairperson Maggie Kathewera Banda at the MEC Head Office in Lilongwe.
The NGO, GCN, came to present a petition to Malawi Electoral Commission to promote participation of women, including young women and women with disabilities in Electoral and political processes in Malawi.
In their petition, the Network has asked MEC to consider institutionalising gender and social inclusion within its structures, processes, and budget across the electoral cycle, among other demands.
In response, the MEC Chairperson thanked the Gender Coordination network for coming up with the petition at the right time just after the elections as this will allow MEC to find ways to incorporate the demands in the upcoming electoral cycle. Apart from that, the Chairperson pointed out that some of the demands can also be well addressed by the office of the registrar of political parties, while others can also be dealt with by the Parliament so that we see an improved number of women in the Electoral processes.
