The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has commended District Commissioners, Chief Executive Officers, council staff, District Elections Supervisory Teams, and the Malawi Police Service for their outstanding contribution to the successful conduct of the 2025 General Election.

MEC Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, made the remarks today during the opening of the 2025 General Election Review Meeting held in Lilongwe with District Commissioners, CEOs and Officers In-Charge of Police.

Justice Mtalimanja praised the stakeholders for their professionalism, resilience, and dedication throughout the electoral process.

“In many councils, officers worked under immense pressure, long hours, difficult terrain, and high public expectations,” she said.

She further noted that their commitment played a vital role in maintaining public order and ensuring that electoral activities were implemented smoothly and according to plan.

The review meeting has been strategically organised to provide a platform for honest engagement, reflection, learning, accountability, and institutional improvement as MEC continues to strengthen electoral processes in Malawi.

The meeting is being held with support from the Malawi Electoral Support Programme that is managed UNDP and supported by the EU, USA, Norway, Ireland and FCDO.

Today, the The Catholic University of Malawi celebrated its 25th Graduation Ceremony at Nguludi, where 1,704 graduates crossed a significant milestone in their academic journey. Delivering the Commencement Address, Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, challenged the graduands to leave behind the comfort of shallow waters and boldly "put out into the deep" by pursuing excellence, integrity, lifelong learning, and service to society.

Drawing from the theme "Put Out Into the Deep" (Luke 5), Justice Mtalimanja urged graduates to reject what she termed the culture of "rapidification"—the growing tendency to seek quick results, shortcuts, and instant success without effort, reflection, or depth.

She reminded the graduates that while academic qualifications are important, character, ethics, and integrity are equally critical for success. The Chairperson warned against corruption and unethical conduct, stressing that education should not merely produce employable individuals but responsible citizens capable of serving society with honesty, compassion, and professionalism.

Justice Mtalimanja encouraged the graduates to remain resilient in the face of uncertainty, noting that success is not always immediate or predictable. She emphasized the importance of perseverance, humility, continuous learning, and faith, assuring the graduands that delays in life should not be mistaken for failure.

Addressing the challenge of graduate unemployment, she called on society to create meaningful opportunities for young people through internships, mentorships, apprenticeships, and fair recruitment systems, while encouraging graduates to remain adaptable and open to different pathways towards success.

The ceremony was attended by Catholic Church leaders, University Council members, management, academic staff, parents, guardians, and distinguished guests who gathered to celebrate the achievements of the graduating class.
