And this year's Nobel Prize winners give us plenty of reasons to celebrate!

🇩🇪Two German scientists, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, have been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, alongside American scientist Karl Deisseroth.

Their groundbreaking work on optogenetics has transformed how scientists study the brain, using light to activate and control specific nerve cells. 🧠💡

Meanwhile, Africa is celebrating a remarkable achievement of its own!

🇿🇦South African human rights champion Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her lifelong efforts to advance international law, justice, and human rights ⚖️.

From scientific discoveries that deepen our understanding of life to courageous efforts that defend human dignity, this year's laureates remind us of the power of knowledge, determination, and innovation 👏.

“Hold the trunk open and alert me if the elephant stops breathing” with these words the vet asked our Ambassador Ute König to witness the collaring of an elephant. The animal was fitted with collar 12121 on Ocotober 9th.

Our ambassador was privileged to be invited by IFAW, in collaboration with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) of Malawi, to be present at their undertaking of an elephant de-collaring and collaring exercise. This ecological exercise will contribute to improved monitoring and understanding of elephant movements between Kasungu National Park in Malawi and Lukusuzi National Park in Zambia. The information generated via satellite monitoring will help strengthen evidence-based conservation management. Most importantly it will support measures to mitigate human-wildlife conflict in communities neighbouring these protected areas in addition to the erected fence.

She was invited due to Germany’s longstanding commitment via KfW funding to biodiversity conservation, environmental protection and sustainable development in transfrontier conservation parks in Southern Africa. She was very impressed by the expert team and their smooth handling and commended IFAW for its support in promoting wildlife conservation in Kasungu.

☀️ Powering Malawi’s Future Through Renewable Energy!🇩🇪🤝🇲🇼

On 8 October, the German Ambassador joined the Minister of Energy, Hon. Dr Jean Mathanga, MP, and partners at the EnDev ENGAGE Bridging Event in Lilongwe to reflect on the impact of the Energising Development (EnDev) programme and explore opportunities to expand access to sustainable energy in Malawi.

EnDev is a global partnership between Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland, marking 20 years in 2025.

🔆 Key results in Malawi:

✅ Over 2.4 million people reached with modern, sustainable energy!!

✅ €2.25 million from Germany supporting solar systems and solar refrigerators in 200 health facilities.

✅ €1 million from Germany, alongside €3 million from the EU, supporting 450 MSMEs with solar products.

EnDev now continues under the new ENGAGE programme. ENGAGE aims at accelerating Africa’s transition to accessible renewable energy together with the African Union.

Germany is proud to have supported Malawi’s energy journey for over a decade!!

Under the motto “Divided by History, United by Choice”, the Embassy celebrated 36 years of German Unity 🇩🇪 at the Ambassador’s Residence, welcoming the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs George T. Chaponda, M.P. as Guest of Honour.

The Hon. Minister underlined that as value partners, Germany and Malawi 🇩🇪🇲🇼 share a deep and unwavering commitment to Multilateralism, to the rule of law ⚖️ and the purposes and principals of the UN Charta 🌍,

Invited guests cherished Germany’s ongoing support through Development Cooperation, which continue to make a big impact on the lives of many Malawians. 🇲🇼

The Ambassador made clear that Germany will continue to stand by Malawi’s side. 🤝

Discussing how to strengthen Cooperation between Malawi and Germany
Ambassador-designate to Germany, Dr Evans R. Matabwa visited his German opposite number, Ambassador Ute König in our embassy in Lilongwe before departing for Berlin.

They discussed development cooperation with regard to the upcoming government consultations in Lilongwe this month and exchanged views on fostering economic growth opportunities in agriculture, mining and tourism.
Their Pictures are taken with the Mzathu bear symbolising the bilateral friendship in front of the embassy.

🌍 Think you know how big Africa is? Your world map may have misled you.

🗺️ The United Nations​ General Assembly has backed the African-led “Correct the Map” initiative — encouraging the use of equal-area maps, including the Equal Earth projection, when representing the relative size of continents.

🇩🇪 Germany was among the 164 countries that voted in favour of the resolution.

Why does that matter?

Many of the world maps we are most familiar with distort land area, making regions closer to the poles appear disproportionately large. Equal-area projections offer a more accurate picture of the relative size of continents — including Africa.

‼️ The initiative is about more than cartography. It is about representation, visibility, and seeing our world in its true proportions.

Democracy cannot be taken for granted. It must be safeguarded and practised anew every day.

Germany has experienced this first-hand throughout its history; its first democracy was established in 1919. However, it came to an end in 1933. This was followed by a period of dictatorship, war and the division of Germany, symbolised by the Berlin Wall. Places such as Niederkirchnerstrasse in Berlin serve as a reminder of this history.

In 1990, 36 years ago, reunification was achieved through free elections. This was driven by the peaceful revolution of the people in the GDR and made possible by international diplomacy.

Divided by history. United by choice.
