Homeland Security Minister leads community policing awareness campaign
The Minister of Homeland Security, Mr Peter Mukhito, is visiting Ministry formations in the Northern Region as part of a tour aimed at enhancing security in the country.
Among other engagements, Minister Mukhito is leading a community policing awareness campaign aimed at combating mob justice, su***de, murder and violence on the elderly people.
On his first stop in Karonga district on August 31, 2026 at the Community ground, Minister Mukhito urged Malawians to desist from barbaric acts and respect the rule of law.
The Inspector General of Police, Mr Richard Chakupaleza Chikoko Luhanga, reaffirmed the Malawi Police Service's commitment to enforcing the law and protecting communities.
Speaking in Karonga, Paramount Chief Kyungu urged his subjects to report cases of violence against elderly people, drug trafficking and human trafficking to the Police.
On September 1, 2026 Minister Mukhito proceeded to Rumphi district, where he led a similar community policing awareness campaign at Bolero Community Ground.
Speaking during the event, Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe hailed the initiative as timely and necessary.
During the tour, Minister Mukhito is also inspecting the newly constructed Police houses. He also joined officers from the Malawi Police Service, Malawi Prisons Service and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services in solidarity walks.
The programme includes Lectures for officers from the security institutions (Police, Immigration and Prisons) in Karonga, Mzuzu and Kasungu.
The delegation accompanying the Minister includes the Deputy Minister of Homeland Security Mr Norman Chisale M.P, and the Deputy Minister of Gender Mrs Martha Mzomera Ngwira M.P., among others.
As part of the activities, the MPS football team, Blue Eagles FC, played friendly matches against Songwe United in Karonga, and Bolero Select in Rumphi.
The Malawi Police Band is also providing musical entertainment throughout the programme.
