Ministry of Labour, TEVETA and British Council Discuss New TEVET Admission Policy
The Ministry of Labour, Skills and Innovation, in collaboration with TEVETA and the British Council, on Wednesday held a meeting to discuss and validate the draft policy for admission of students into TEVET institutions, aimed at improving access, inclusion and skills development in Malawi.
The meeting, convened under the European Union-funded Zantchito Skills for Jobs Technical Assistance Project implemented by the British Council, discussed key proposals including increasing student enrollment from 25,000 to 125,000 by 2030, expanding career guidance services to reach 1.2 million learners, and increasing annual applications into TEVET institutions from 30,000 to 80,000.
The draft policy also promotes flexible entry pathways, including Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), while strengthening gender equality, disability inclusion, labour market alignment and reducing financial barriers affecting access to technical and vocational education.
Senior Deputy Director for Technical and Vocational Training in the Ministry of Labour, Skills and Innovation, Chifundo Lodzeni, commended stakeholders for their contributions towards shaping the policy, saying the reforms will help improve the quality, relevance and employability outcomes within the TEVET sector.
European Union Programme Manager for Education and TEVET, Donatella Gobbi, expressed concern over delays in finalising the policy and urged the Ministry to take a leading role in ensuring its completion, observing that Malawi continues to lose potential benefits from TEVET skills due to limited access caused by structural and financial barriers. Meanwhile, Zantchito Skills for Jobs Technical Assistance Project Deputy Team Leader, Dick Maganga, expressed hope that the next steps in the formulation of the policy will progress smoothly under the Ministry’s leadership.
