Children Parliamentarians Call for Tough Sanctions Against Perpetrators of Child Marriages

This week, the Law Commission joined Save the Children Malawi in engaging over 180 Child Parliamentarians from across Mchinji District during capacity-building sessions and the Children’s Parliament proceedings, which officially close today.

During the engagement and their deliberations, the child parliamentarians called on authorities to introduce strong sanctions against perpetrators of child marriages. They also called for greater support for survivors, including economic assistance and other interventions to help them rebuild their lives and reintegrate into their families and communities.

The engagement formed part of the ongoing work by the Law Commission and the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Advocacy Task Team as the development of legislation to end child marriages progresses.

The CSO Advocacy Task Team, led by the NGO Coalition on Child Rights, planned the engagement to provide an opportunity for child parliamentarians to share their perspectives and contribute to the development of the proposed legislation. The parliamentary event was organised by Save the Children Malawi in collaboration with GNET, World Vision Malawi and the Mchinji District Council Child Participation Committee.

During the engagement, the Law Commission highlighted gaps in the current legal framework, particularly the absence of a comprehensive law addressing all aspects of child marriage. The Commission explained that the development of the legislation will, among other things, contribute to strengthening accountability for perpetrators and facilitators of child marriages and provide social protection and support for survivors.

Law Commission Engages Child Parliamentarians in Mchinji on Child Protection Laws

The Law Commission today, with support from NORAD through Save the Children Malawi, engaged 159 children participating in Children’s Parliament in Mchinji District on laws and legal provisions that protect children from various forms of violence and abuse. The engagement took place at Mchinji Teachers Training College.

During the engagement, the Commission shared information on key child protection laws and the rights of children, with the aim of equipping the participants with knowledge that will enable them to protect themselves and others, as well as respond appropriately to different forms of violence they may experience in their communities.

The session also provided an opportunity for the participants to ask questions and seek clarification on issues relating to child protection, to which the Law Commission responded. The Commission further distributed comic books containing simplified information on child-related laws to serve as reference materials for the participants.

The participants in the Children’s Parliament have been drawn from various Traditional Authorities (T/As) across Mchinji District. The Parliament provides a platform for children to discuss and deliberate on issues affecting them and their communities, including child marriages and other forms of violence against children.

The Children’s Parliament has been organised by the Mchinji District Child Participation Committee in partnership with Save the Children, World Vision, GNET and other stakeholders.

LAW COMMISSION REVIEWS AND VALIDATES 2026–2030 STRATEGIC PLAN
The Law Commission is today conducting a Review and Validation Meeting of its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan at Lifestyle Boutique Hotel in Lilongwe.

The meeting has brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), development partners and other relevant institutions, to review the Plan and provide valuable input into the Commission’s strategic priorities for the next five years.

The engagement provides an opportunity for stakeholders to assess the Commission’s proposed priorities, programmes and interventions and ensure that the Strategic Plan responds effectively to Malawi’s legal and justice needs.

Stakeholder contributions will help strengthen the Plan and ensure that it provides a clear and practical framework for the Commission to effectively fulfil its mandate of law reform and promoting public awareness and understanding of the laws of Malawi and the Constitution.
