Celebrating Andrew Viano’s award in the Radio Category at the OFAB Africa and OFAB Malawi Media Awards 2023.

His award-winning story explored whether genome editing could offer a solution to soybean rust, a disease that severely affected local farmers during the 2022–2023 farming season.

The story also examined the ongoing debate around cultivation of genetically food crops in Malawi and increased adoption of its products and the potential of emerging science and technology to address agricultural challenges and strengthen food security.

Through initiatives such as the OFAB Media Awards, NCST continues to support journalists in telling impactful stories that promote public understanding of research, science, technology and innovation.

There is still time to apply for a new funding opportunity for African researchers!

The Science Granting Councils Initiative has launched a competitive multilateral research call to advance Africa’s Science, Technology and Innovation priorities under STISA 2034—the African Union’s flagship strategy for driving socio economic transformation through research and innovation.

This call is unique because it:

• Aligns directly with continental priorities (STISA 2034)—ensuring quality research feeds into real policy and development impact.

• Funds multi-country collaborations by fostering consortia across at least three African countries for a three-year duration.

• Highlights African science granting councils’ leadership in shaping science and innovation systems.

• Supports Africa-led innovation across critical sectors shaping the continent’s future, namely agriculture, energy, environment, artificial intelligence and health.

This call is funded by a strong international partnership of African Science Granting Councils and IDRC, the Government of Norway, the UK’s FCDO and Wellcome.
Private sector, NGOs, and international partners are encouraged to join a consortium—but note that funding is restricted to African institutions.

The National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) is offering funding opportunities through the Science and Technology Fund to strengthen research dissemination and scientific publishing with the funding levels of up to MK 10 million.

The Research Dissemination Grant, supports institutions to organise conferences for sharing research findings. Priority will be given to conferences aligned with NCST’s research priorities.

Meet Patrick Nyasulu, one of our previous grant recipients under the Technology Transfer and Commercialisation Grant.

He is the founder and CEO of Tensorview, an Artificial intelligence company. He received the grant in 2024 to support the scaling of a Safety Gear AI System developed by Tensorview to protect workers in high-risk environments.

The safety gear system uses AI-powered cameras to verify protective gear such as helmets and safety jackets, while smart helmets and IoT sensors monitor environmental conditions including dust, temperature, humidity and gas levels. Real-time data is transmitted to a central dashboard, enabling safety officers to respond quickly to potential risks.

Since receiving the grant, Tensorview has grown to deliver other AI Solutions including the development of Sign Language Recognition System. In 2026 the company was nominated at the ICT Association of Malawi Awards in the category of IT Startup of the year.

HIGHLIGHTING KEY RESULTS OF BUSINESS INNOVATION SURVEY (BIS) 2026 REPORT

Nearly half of innovative firms undertake innovation on an ad hoc basis and without formal strategic guidance. Among enterprises that innovate in Malawi, 52.6 percent of the business enterprises had an innovation strategy, while 47.4 percent did not.

Furthermore, most of the business enterprises (62.1 percent) carry out innovation without setting aside financial resources specifically for innovation only 37.9 percent of innovative enterprises allocated a specific budget for innovation activities.

THE FUTURE OF SMART HOMES WITH AI AND IOT

Imagine a home that understands your lifestyle, anticipates your needs, and automatically adapts to make everyday living safer, smarter, and more energy-efficient. This is the vision behind "The Future of Smart Homes Using AI and IoT," an innovative project developed by Chifundo Banda.

The project combines the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to create an intelligent home ecosystem where lighting, temperature, security systems, and household appliances work together seamlessly.

The innovation is currently at the prototype stage, where a functional demonstration model has been developed to showcase how an AI and IoT-powered smart home system operates.

HIGHLIGHTING KEY RESULTS OF BUSINESS INNOVATION SURVEY (BIS) 2026 REPORT

The BIS 2026 findings highlight significant differences in innovation performance across sectors in Malawi. The information and communication sector recorded the highest innovation rate, with 97.3 percent of enterprises engaging in innovation activities.

This was followed by mining and quarrying at 84.2 percent and manufacturing at 74.1 percent.

Celebrating Ezelina Kamaliza's win at the at Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) Media Awards, held in Nairobi in 2025.

Ezelina was runner-up in the Television category. She earned the award for her work in promoting public understanding of how Research, Science, Technology and Innovation can transform agriculture, improve food security and support sustainable development.

Every year, NCST collaborates with OFAB to support science journalists and help build their capacity to tell impactful stories that contribute to Malawi's research, science, technology and innovation development.
