Work is progressing steadily on the Embangweni Water Supply Scheme, a transformative project that will bring safe, reliable and sustainable water to 10,000 people who have lived without access to safe water for generations.

The project includes:
4 boreholes providing the water source
Solar-powered pumping system for sustainable water supply

90m³ water storage tank

Approximately 5km of water distribution pipeline
17 water points serving communities across the area

A treated piped-water supply system designed to provide safe water to the community

For the people of Embangweni, this is more than infrastructure. It is access to safe water, improved health, dignity and a better quality of life.

At FISD, we are proud to be part of building infrastructure that delivers lasting impact.

We are proud to have played our part in delivering infrastructure that demonstrates the potential of solar energy to transform Malawi’s irrigation and water systems.

As the contractor behind this project, FISD Limited is delighted to see the work receiving national attention and contributing to the growing conversation around renewable energy, energy security and sustainable development.

For us, this is more than a project. It is a demonstration of what local expertise, innovation and homegrown engineering capacity can deliver for Malawi.

Proud to share that today we trained ten District Irrigation Engineers from districts expected to be most affected by the anticipated El Niño, equipping them with practical skills in irrigation pump installation under the Government's El Niño mitigation programme.

The programme supports the rollout of 800 irrigation pump systems, each serving a five-hectare irrigation scheme, to strengthen Malawi's food security and climate resilience.

Officially opening the training, Principal Secretary (Administration) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Bennett Nkasala, urged the engineers to apply their newly acquired skills diligently, saying, "The success of this programme will be measured by how effectively these systems are installed and the food they help produce for Malawi."

FISD also unveiled the K50 million El Niño Preparedness Excellence Challenge, which will reward the best-performing District Implementation Team, with the winner to be jointly selected by the Ministry of Agriculture and FISD Limited.

Government has engaged FISD Limited Company to supply 800 solar powered irrigation pumps, worth K10.8 billion, to enhance irrigation farming and food security in the country amid concerns of El Nino threats.

Speaking in Lilongwe during the opening of a training for district engineers, on installation and operation of the irrigation systems, Ministry of Agriculture PS responsible for administration Bennet Nkasala said Government is running an irrigation programme in which it is investing K16 billion.

He said this is part of response to the El Nino. Each pump is intended to support a five-hectare irrigation scheme. The 800 pumps will cover 4,000 hectares under irrigation across the country.

"This is a significant national investment that will benefit thousands of farming households and strengthen Malawi's resilience against the anticipated effects of El Niño,” he said.

FISD executive director Kondwani Nanchukwa said the company is committed to supporting government in addressing the food security challenges by providing irrigation solutions.

"The pumps will help build resilience of the communities so that when El Nino hits, they will have been well prepared," said Nanchukwa.

Nanchukwa also disclosed that FISD will reward districts that will expedite installation of the irrigation systems. FISD has set aside K50 million for the best performing district.
