NKHATA BAY WOMAN RECEIVES iPhone 17Pro AFTER WINNING FCB PROMOTION

Irene Monkeza of Nkhata Bay has received an iPhone 17 Pro after emerging as one of the winners in First Capital Bank (FCB)’s ‘Chinthuchi Tatenga’ digital banking promotion.

Monkeza, who received the phone at FCB Nkhata Bay Branch on Friday, said she was excited to receive the prize, explaining that she did not expect her routine digital transactions to earn her such a valuable reward.

“I am very happy to receive this phone. I was just using the FCB digital services for my transactions, so winning came as a surprise to me,” she said.

She encouraged other FCB customers to use the bank’s digital platforms and participate in the promotion, saying customers can benefit from services they already use in their everyday lives.

“I would encourage others to continue transacting digitally because you never know, you could also be the next winner,” Monkeza said.

The FCB Nkhata Bay Branch Manager said the bank was pleased to reward Monkeza, adding that the promotion is intended to encourage customers to increase their use of digital banking services while giving them an opportunity to win prizes.

The manager said customers qualify by making at least two transactions per week through the FCB App or by dialing *1111 #, with a minimum transaction value of K30,000.

The ‘Chinthuchi Tatenga’ promotion runs until August 31 and offers a K10 million grand cash prize to one winner, three iPhone 17 Pro devices as monthly prizes and K100,000 cash prizes to 15 winners every two weeks.

Eligible transactions include bill payments, airtime top-ups, Airtel Money and TNM Mpamba transfers, as well as betting transfers.

UCHI-UNDP PROJECT TURNS LOCAL WASTE INTO FERTILISER FOR KAKUTI FARMERS

Farmers in Kakuti, Nkhata Bay District, are turning locally available materials into organic fertiliser under the five-year Ulimi ndi Chilengedwe (UCHI) Project, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to promote sustainable farming and improve food security.

The farmers are producing Mbeya manure by mixing maize bran, ashes, animal dung, urea or NPK and water, which is left to cure for 21 days before use. The manure provides farmers with an affordable alternative to commercial fertilisers while making use of locally available materials.

Chairperson for Kakuti Catchment Management Committee in Kavuzi Extension Planning Area (EPA), Stainley Phiri, said the committee has three sub-committees responsible for forest conservation, swale construction and marker ridge installation to control soil erosion and improve water retention.

Phiri said the project is also promoting nutrition through the production of orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, yellow cassava and beans, as well as fruit trees and demonstration plots.

He said extension workers continue providing technical support to farmers, helping communities combine sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation and improved nutrition.

UCHI PROJECT PROMOTES NUTRITION AND FOOD SECURITY IN NKHATA BAY

Farmers in Chilerawana and Mkondezi villages in Nkhata Bay District are adopting community and backyard gardens, crop diversification and nutrition practices to improve household food security and nutrition under the Ulimi ndi Chilengedwe (UCHI) Project.

The progress was observed on Thursday when representatives from Mzuzu Agricultural Development Division (ADD), Nkhata Bay District Agriculture Office and UNICEF visited the two communities to assess activities being implemented under the project.

UCHI is a five-year initiative supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aimed at promoting climate-smart agriculture, nutrition and community resilience.

In Chilerawana, farmers under Tiyanjane and Temwanani care groups have established a community garden where they grow vegetables for household consumption and sale. They are also using animal manure to improve soil fertility and conducting cooking demonstrations to promote nutritious meals using locally available foods.

In Mkondezi, farmers are diversifying crops by growing cassava, rice, maize and beans, while establishing backyard gardens for vegetables.

The project is also promoting yellow cassava because of its nutritional value, as part of efforts to improve household food security and access to nutritious foods.

CHINTHECHE EPA SENSITISES VILLAGERS ON MAJITI RIVER CONSERVATION

Chintheche Extension Planning Area (EPA) has sensitised villagers in Kapekenya Village under Group Village Headman Ngombo in Nkhata Bay District against blocking the Majiti River for fishing, saying the practice is affecting access to water for farming communities downstream.

The sensitisation meeting, organised by the Nkhata Bay District Agriculture Office at Kapekenya Community Based Childcare Centre (CBCC), brought together officers from the Crops, Fisheries and Forestry departments as well as members of the Chintheche Police Unit.
The team urged villagers to conserve rivers, forests and other natural resources and desist from destructive fishing practices such as using mosquito nets.

Chintheche Police Unit Senior Superintendent GA Sitima warned that people who unlawfully exploit natural resources risk prosecution under relevant laws, urging communities, particularly the youth, to protect the environment.

Group Village Headman Ngombo called on villagers to take collective responsibility for safeguarding natural resources, saying communities and government should work together to ensure that rivers and other resources remain available for present and future generations.
