🚨 EXPAT ALERT: Watch out for the "Yellow Terminal" USD Trap! 💳
Have you noticed those bright yellow payment terminals (Mercado Pago) popping up everywhere? Be extra careful when paying your bill!

Many of these terminals are set to automatically default to USD—often without the staff mentioning a word. It’s important to note that the waiter or waitress may not be doing this intentionally, as they might not even be aware that the option to pay in MXN is hidden on the terminal. Tucked away in tiny lettering below is the option to pay in local currency (MXN).

🛑 Why this matters:
When you accept the USD default, you are hit with Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC), which adds an automatic 6% to 8% markup on your transaction. That means you’re paying extra money straight to the terminal provider for absolutely nothing!

💡 Pro Tip for Paying:
Always check the screen before you tap or insert your card.

Select MXN (Mexican Pesos): Let your own bank handle the conversion rate—it will almost always be significantly cheaper than the terminal’s rate.
